LABRADORITE FREEFORM

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: LABRADORITE FREEFORM Madagascar Labradorite is a relatively rare mineral, and one distinctive for the optical phenomenon known as labradorescence. Twinning on a microscopic level of the feldspar structure causes different light waves to be reflected in a different fashion creating a shimmering sheet of color seemingly just below the surface of the rock. One whole side of this wonderful piece flashes with large areas of gold, green and blue, an effect enhanced by the high polish which has been applied to the stone, 12 1/2 inches high.

AQUAMARINE

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: AQUAMARINE Brazil A distinctively colored form of beryl, whose name in Greek referred to a variety of blue-green stones reminiscent of the romantic color assigned to the waters of the ocean. It is most appropriate in the case of aquamarine, or "water of the sea", as the present example perfectly demonstrates: a fascinating crystal with lovely clarity, it exhibits and beautiful soft blue-green aquamarine coloring and measures 5 inches long.

Description: HELIDOR Ukraine Heliodor is the yellow-green variety of beryl, closely aligned with emerald, morganite and aquamarine. Its name means "gift of the sun" in Greek, coined in the early twentieth century in a bid to market golden beryls from Southwestern Africa. This specimen exhibits the characteristically beautiful and delicate lime-green-yellow coloring and complete clarity beneath finely textured outer surfaces resulting from the fascinatingly regular scale-like squares of the crystal habit. A lovely little example it measures 3 1/8 inches long.

CELESTITE GEODE

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: CELESTITE GEODE Madagascar Named for its beautiful pale blue color, celestite is a relatively recent find from the mineral and gemstone-rich island of Madagascar. This gently curving geode is lined with a carpet of lovely soft gray-blue crystals, a delicate and unusual coloring found exclusively at this locality. As the focus of the mining on the island has shifted more to the gemstone-bearing regions, however, availability of mineral specimens such as celestite has become increasingly diminished, making an exquisite example such as this all the more desirable, measuring 7 x 7 1/2 inches and presented on a custom metal display stand.

GREEN APOPHOLITE

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: GREEN APOPHOLITE Poona, India Apophyllite is the name given to three distinct minerals, fluorapophyllite, hydroxyapophyllite and natroapophyllite. It is often described as a member of the zeolite group, but their habit is phyllosilicate (sheet-like tetrahedral rings) as opposed to tectosilicate (with a framework of interconnected tetrahedrons). The lovely soft green opaque crystals here indicate the presence of vanadium, and nestle in a carpet of soft white blade-like calcite crystals. Apopholite of any kind is an exotic addition to a mineral collection, and the present specimen is a fine example, 11 inches wide and 12 1/2 inches high overall on a custom metal display stand.

SLICED

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: SLICED "WORM WOOD" SPECIMEN Australia Beneath the unassuming exterior of red and gray rock is found the incredible patterns of what is known as Australian "worm wood". The rocky cluster has been sliced and the interior surface brought to a high polish to show off the incredible patterns of the mineral: white streaks and dots leap from an inky black ground, some with lovely soft brown "shadows". This patterning and the material's name come from the same source: holes bored by ancient Teredo shipworms that have been filled over millions of years to create this gorgeous natural wonder. The overall impression is evocative, both of some incredible microscopic photograph or of a captured instant of an explosion of bright white lights. Fascinating and beautiful, the specimen measures 10 1/2 inches wide and stands 11 1/2 inches high on a custom metal display stand.

CAVANSITE ON STILBITE

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: CAVANSITE ON STILBITE Wagholi District, Wagholi, Pune, India In one of the most wonderfully aesthetic combinations to be found in the world of mineral-collecting, beautiful, deep blue, spherical cavansite crystals sit on a bed of soft shimmering blade-like stilbite crystals. Cavansite is an extremely rare silicate of calcium and vanadium (hence the name) and was discovered only relatively recently, in 1967 in Malheur County, Oregon. The mineral is found in only one other location in the world: in the Deccan Traps of India there are literally hundreds of quarries, located across half a million square kilometers of the lava flow, or 'trap rocks', that make up the basalt plateau; only one of these quarries however, Wagholi, is home to cavansite, truly one of the rarest minerals in the world. As with apopholite, it is often discovered in conjunction with scintillating snow-white stilbite, which provides a highly aesthetic contrast to the strikingly-colored cavansite crystal blooms, here standing 9 3/4 inches high overall on a custom metal display stand.

Description: LARGE CELESTITE GEODE Madagascar There is a small, unassuming spot on the west coast of Madagascar where light cream-colored geodes are found. The surprise is that when opened, they reveal themselves to contain these beautiful sky-blue celestite crystals. Celestite is a strontium sulfate and in the spiritual study of crystallography is reputed to be of great assistance in dream recall and astral travel. It is found in small quantities in many localities, but only in quantity and bearing this characteristic sky-blue color on the island of Madagascar. This is a particularly fine example of such a geode, with gorgeous coloring, large blocky crystals and an elegant rounded form, 13 1/2 inches wide and 17 inches high overall on a custom metal display stand.

Description: MALACHITE Democratic Republic of Congo This beautiful freeform has been cut from a single piece of malachite, and the surface polished almost entirely smooth to display the incredible range of green shades that form fine concentric rings in the mineral's botryoidal growth. The patterning creates a trippy mass of bubble-like circles, several forming distinctive figure 8s, a characteristic highly sought after due to that numeral's status as a lucky number in Chinese and several other Asian cultures. A particularly nice specimen, it stands 10 inches high on a custom metal display stand.

MALACHITE

Description: MALACHITE Democratic Republic of Congo Unlike the previous Lot, the face of this fine malachite specimen has not been entirely polished smooth, retaining some of the undulating grape-like form of the mineral's natural state. The peaks of some of the botryoidal growths have been sliced and polished, however, to reveal the wonderful concentric patterning within, in a seemingly infinite variety of shades of green. Malachite has been mined for well over 3000 years, long popular as a decorative mineral - the St Petersburg Hermitage has an opulent Malachite Room and in Greek mythology Demeter's throne was fashioned from malachite, augmented with golden details. This fine specimen measures 8 1/2 inches wide and stands 7 1/2 inches high on a custom metal display stand.

The larger piece contains a bird, a tree and a putto with a bow, perhaps out hunting for his supper; executed with equally fine detail it stands 4 3/4 inches high.
