City of Carlisle Electric Tramway Company Tramcar, the last known surviving Carlisle city tramcar. The auctioneers were astonished to find this

Lot 1: City of Carlisle Electric Tramway Company Tramcar, the last known surviving Carlisle city tramcar. The auctioneers were astonished to find this

Description: City of Carlisle Electric Tramway Company Tramcar, the last known surviving Carlisle city tramcar. The auctioneers were astonished to find this stored in an outbuilding close to the city centre. Their research suggests this tramcar was one of eight built for the City of Carlisle Electric Tramway Co. by the United Electric Car Company of Preston in 1912. Tramcars ran in Carlisle until 1931 after which the rolling stock was broken up and the car bodies sold for use as summerhouses and outbuildings. In 1971 only two were still known to exist, one of which was salvaged and used to restore a similar tramcar owned by the Tramway Museum at Crich, Derbyshire. The other, used as a garden summerhouse at Scotby, was similarly broken up with little being salvaged other than interior fittings. The tramcar to be auctioned was one of two first discovered in the early 1980?s built into a bungalow at Rosley. As the tramcars deteriorated they had to be removed to save the bungalow from collapse. One was destroyed at this stage while the other was bought by a local enthusiast. Since then it has been in storage awaiting restoration. E500-1500 Please note this lot is stored at Carlisle and is on view by appointment, it will not be on show at Dalemain
