Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: DDS Horst P Horst (1906-1999). Electric Beauty, Paris, 1939. Gelatin silver print, printed later, photographer's blindstamp in the margin, signed in pencil and titled and dated in unknown hand verso, 29 x 22.5cm (11 3/8 x 8 7/8in). "The picture shows a model in face mask and rollers under a salon hair dryer who has furthermore covered her legs in a paste, is taking a foot bath and is sitting next to a small table covered in toiletries. It illustrates in a very palpable and humourous way just what women undergo in order to comply with the requirements of cosmetics and fashion. The figure is depersonalised, becomes the product of cosmetic techniques, a sythentic being. Horst's additional trick is to set up the whole situation after a motif by Hieronymous Bosch, in which you find a reading monk and a birdheaded mythical creature. This background gives the whole scene an additional dimension. To the already grotesque situation of woman as a product of the cosmetics industry is added an historical background while it is simultaneously put in the context of the fantastic. Once again, Horst manages to combine everyday reality, in a slightly exaggerated reconstruction in the studio, and the world of dreams, of fiction". Reinhold Misselbeck, (Horst P Horst, Art Forum, 1992)
