ATTRIBUTED TO BEN ALI HAGGIN: SEATED NUDE

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: ATTRIBUTED TO BEN ALI HAGGIN: SEATED NUDE Oil sketch on canvas, unsigned, unframed. 24 x 20 in. Note: James Ben Haggin, portrait painter and set designer is usually known as Ben Ali Haggin. He was named after his grandfather, James Ben Ali Haggin, about whom the New York Times reported: "It was the rise of 'James B.,' as he was known, from a struggling lawyer . . . to the greatest mine owner on earth, the greatest turfman, and the greatest land owner in the West, that gave him the international reputation which he enjoyed." Haggin had a profound impact on California, on the nation's mining operations, on agriculture, and horse racing while amassing one of the world's great fortunes. Ben Ali had the best schooling available. His art education began in Munich and continued at the Art Students League in New York. By 1903 he was experiencing considerable success as a professional portrait painter. In 1908 he exhibited at the PAFA and the Corcoran, and his portrait of Ms. Mary Garden as "Thais," displayed in the front window of a New York gallery created a sensation. He continued to receive commissions to paint the portraits of the most rich, famous and glamorous segment of society. Ben Ali was already successful in his chosen profession in 1914 when he received word that he had inherited an enormous portion of his grandfather's estate. Not only was he a talented portraitist, he discovered he had a knack for designing the "tableaux vivants" popular with high society at that time. He was in great demand as the designer of balls and pageants and eventually worked with impresario Flo Ziegfeld on his "Follies." He was a member of the National Academy of Design, National Association of Portrait Painters, the Society of American Artists, and The Society of Independent Artists. He belonged to the Knickerbocker, Tuxedo, and National Arts Clubs, as well as being a Mason. He was a veteran member of the Twelfth Regiment N. Y. N. G. and was awarded the French Legion of Honor and the Greek Royal Order of The Holy Sepulchre. His works are held in many public and private collections. Provenance: Formerly property of the Ali Haggin family.
