Lot 2180: 2V Ovid PUB. OVIDII NASONIS OPERUM 1661 Metamorphoses Ancient Roman Literature Antique Fine Leather Binding Heinsius Schrevel Leffen

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: Pub. Ovidii Nasonis Operum. Author: Ovid - Publius Ovidius Naso, known as Ovid in the English-speaking world, was a Roman poet who is best known as the author of the three major collections of poetry, the "Heroides," "Amores" and "Ars Amatoria," and of the "Metamorphoses," a mythological hexameter poem. He is also well known for the "Fasti," about the Roman calendar, and the "Tristia" and "Epistulae ex Ponto," two collections of poems written in exile on the Black Sea. Ovid was also the author of several smaller pieces, the "Remedia Amoris," the "Medicamina Faciei Femineae," and the long curse-poem "Ibis." He also wrote a lost tragedy, "Medea." He is considered a master of the elegiac couplet, and is traditionally ranked alongside Virgil and Horace as one of the three canonic poets of Latin literature. The scholar Quintilian considered him the last of the canonical Latin love elegists. His poetry, much imitated during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, greatly influenced European art and literature and remains as one of the most important sources of classical mythology.Editor: Cornelis Schrevel - Cornelis Schrevel was a Dutch physician and scholar. He studied medicine at Leiden University and replaced his father Theodorus Schrevelius as head of the college faculty at Leiden in 1642. He published a Latin-Greek lexicon and edited many classical authors, including an edition of Curtius Rufus owned by Thomas Jefferson. His lexicon ran to scores of editions in half-a-dozen languages, to the early nineteenth century; an expansion of 1663 was edited by Joseph Hill., Nicolas Heinsius - Nikolaas Heinsius the Elder, Dutch classical scholar and poet, son of Daniel Heinsius, was born at Leiden. His boyish Latin poem Breda expugnata was printed in 1637, and attracted much attention. In 1642 he began his wanderings with a visit to England in search of manuscripts of the classics; but he met with little courtesy from the English scholars. In 1644 he was sent to Spa to drink the waters; his health restored, he set out once more in search of codices, passing through Leuven, Brussels, Mechelen, Antwerp and so back to Leiden, everywhere collating manuscripts and taking philological and textual notes.Almost immediately he set out again, and arriving in Paris was welcomed with open arms by the French savants. After investigatinge all the classical texts he could obtain, he proceeded southwards, and visited on the same quest Lyon, Marseille, Pisa, Florence (where he paused to issue a new edition of Ovid) and Rome. The next year, 1647, found him in Naples, from which he fled during the reign of Masaniello; he pursued his labours in Leghorn, Bologna, Venice, where he was supported by Jan Reynst and Padua, at which latter city he published in 1648 his volume of original Latin verse entitled Italica. He proceeded to Milan and worked for a considerable time in the Ambrosian library; he was preparing to explore Switzerland in the same patient manner when the news of his father's illness recalled him hurriedly to Leiden. He was soon called away to Stockholm at the invitation of Queen Christina, at whose court he waged war with Salmasius, who accused him of having supplied Milton with facts from the life of that great but irritable scholar. Heinsius paid a flying visit to Leiden in 1650, but immediately returned to Stockholm. In 1651 he once more visited France and Italy with Isaac Vossius, in order to buy books or coins for Christina. In 1654 Christina stepped down, and two years later Heinsius became a diplomat for the States-General on behalf of Coenraad van Beuningen. In 1665 he was appointed by the city of Amsterdam as the official historian. In 1669 he went to Moscow and in 1672 to Bremen. In 1675 he settled down in his countryhouse near Vianen, but moved to the Hague later on.Heinsius had two illegitimate children by a daughter of a Lutheran minister. He married her only after a law suit, but did not want to recognize his sons, Daniel and Nikolaes Heinsus the Younger (1655-1718). This Nikolaes became a wanderer, who in 1679 was appointed as Christina's private physician in Rome.Heinsius collected one of the biggest private libraries in Europe. He was visited by Lorenzo Magalotti in 1668 when visiting the United Provinces. After his death about 13.000 books were sold in 1683. The famous catalogue was used by many scholars as a reference. In 1653 Heinsius collected his Latin poems into a volume. His latest labours were the editing of Velleius Paterculus in 1678 and of Valerius Flaccus in 1680. He died at The Hague on October 7, 1681.Publisher: Pieter LeffenCity: LeidenYear: 1661Binding Style: HardcoverNumber of Volumes: 2 Complete: NoPagination: 667 pages plus 16 unnumbered pages of index/832 pages plus 31 unnumbered pages of indexWidth: 5" Height: 7.5"Book Details: Condition / Notes: This is a scarce two-volume set of a 17th-century edition of the works of the Roman poet Ovid, volumes one and two of a three-volume set, with second volume containing the epic Latin poem "The Metamorphoses."Antique volumes are bound in full leather, with raised bands, gilt-lettered labels and ornamental designs to spine. Samuel Roth EUROPE: A BOOK FOR AMERICA 1919 Author-Signed First Edition US Literature Poem On Decay Of Europe & Promise Of America

Lot 2184: Samuel Roth EUROPE: A BOOK FOR AMERICA 1919 Author-Signed First Edition US Literature Poem On Decay Of Europe & Promise Of America

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: Europe: A Book for AmericaAuthor: Samuel Roth - Samuel Roth was an American publisher and writer. He was the plaintiff in Roth v. United States (1957), which was a key Supreme Court ruling on freedom of sexual expression. The minority opinion, regarding redeeming social value as a criterion in obscenity prosecutions, became a template for the liberalizing First Amendment decisions of the 1960s.A poet in his youth, Roth's work was praised by Edwin Arlington Robinson, Louis Untermeyer, Maurice Samuel, and Ezra Pound, among others. After World War I he founded a bookshop, and traveled to London in 1921 to interview European writers, hoping to sell his essays to magazines. Roth's poetry appeared in several respected magazines, such as The Maccabean and The Hebrew Standard, and in anthologies. His sequence of 18 sonnets, "Nustscha" (composed c. 1915-18) is an elegy to his home town in Galicia. His "Sonnets on Sinai," in The Menorah Journal are also notable. The speaker in the poems plans to visit Sinai in order to return the Ten Commandments to God, since so many peoples of the world have relegated them to the walls of their public buildings in order to lie to themselves about their own moral rot.During this time, he wrote two well-reviewed books on the state of the "two worlds" of Europe and America, and the situation of the Jews on both continents. "Europe: A Book for America" (Boni and Liveright, 1919) is a long prophetic poem predicting the decay of Europe and the promise of America. "Now and Forever" (McBride, 1925) is an imaginary "conversation" between Roth and the great British writer Israel Zangwill on the merits of Diaspora and Zionism for the Jewish people. Zangwill praised Roth for his "poetry and pugnacity."In the mid-1920s, with money earned by establishing a school for teaching immigrants English, Roth founded four literary magazines, including Beau, a forerunner of Esquire and perhaps the first American "men's magazine." The most important products in his short-lived magazine empire were the quarterly Two Worlds and Two Worlds Monthly. He chose to publish, in at least some cases without permission, some of the sexually explicit contemporary authors, including (in Two Worlds Monthly), segments of James Joyce's "Ulysses." Joyce won an injunction to stop Roth from printing these expurgated installments. Joyce's publisher Sylvia Beach, at the writer's urging, engineered an international protest in 1927 against Roth, although the nature of copyright law at the time made the charge of piracy debatable. The results were Roth, due to the well-organized protest of 167 authors against him, becoming an international literary pariah, and Random House's winning its case to "de-censor" Ulysses in 1934. Roth soon after published pirated editions of "Lady Chatterley's Lover," most probably the first American to do so. After a raid on his Fifth Avenue warehouse by the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice in 1929, Roth spent over a year in prison on Welfare Island, and in Philadelphia, for distributing pornography.Roth had an unerring sense of literary merit, but since he had no money or status, and because of the international protest, he was ignored by established writers, and outbid by wealthier, better connected Jewish publishers (Alfred A. Knopf, Thomas Seltzer, Bennett Cerf, Horace Liveright). He did not ask permission of some of the best writers he published not only in his underground publications but in his trade imprint, William Faro, Inc. The reputation of "that pirate Roth" spread to all corners of the literary establishment.Roth's instinct for discovering political corruption was first rate. Due to the nature of his popular audience, he appealed to sensationalism. He understood the energy that made Broadway, Washington, and Hollywood glamour irresistible, but his readership demanded romantic cliches and prurient gossip. So Roth sensationalized his exposes and his advertising copy. He did well with his Faro imprint in the early 1930s. His expurgated version of "Lady Chatterley's Lover" was a big seller, as were reprints of classic erotica (especially Mirbeau's "Diary of a Chambermaid"), from which books explicit sex was excised. Another interesting William Faro novel was "A Scarlet Pansy" (Robert Scully, 1932[2]), an early, sympathetic account of a flamboyant homosexual. In 1931, Roth published an expose of Herbert Hoover ("The Strange Career of Mr. Hoover Under Two Flags") which sold extremely well. The Wall Street Crash forced Roth into bankruptcy. What followed was the most complex episode in Roth's life, the one that brought him the most rejection, and the one wherein his degraded status as a pirate and pornographer most unhinged him. This was his infamous anti-Semitic tract, "Jews Must Live" (subtitled "The Persecution of the World by Israel on all the Frontiers of Civilization"). It was self-published in 1934. Written under the pressures of bankruptcy, and the advantage taken of that by colleagues in the underground economy of erotica publishing, this example of ethnic honesty is a terrified response to insecurity and a substitute for self-examination. An embarrassment to the family and to the writer himself, "Jews Must Live" is, ironically, evidence of an imperiousness and irascibility that served Roth well in his iconoclastic efforts against the established legal and moral absolutes he challenged. He later renounced the work, and started to write an (unpublished) revision.Publisher: Boni and LiverightCity: New YorkYear: 1919Printing Information: Signed EditionBinding Style: HardcoverPagination: xi/107 pagesWidth: 5.5" Height: 8"Book Details: Condition / Notes: This is a rare author-signed first edition of this early work by Samuel Roth. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: Biographical SketchesAuthor: Harriet Martineau - Harriet Martineau (12 June 1802 - 27 June 1876) was an English social theorist and Whig writer, often cited as the first female sociologist.Martineau wrote 35 books and a multitude of essays from a sociological, holistic, religious, domestic, and, perhaps most controversial, a feminine perspective; she also translated various works from Auguste Comte. She earned enough to be supported entirely by her writing, a challenging feat for a woman in the Victorian era. Martineau has said of her approach: "when one studies a society, one must focus on all its aspects, including key political, religious, and social institutions". She believed a thorough societal analysis was necessary to understand woman's status. The novelist Margaret Oliphant said "as a born lecturer and politician she (Martineau) was less distinctively affected by her sex than perhaps any other, male or female, of her generation." While she was commonly described as having a masculine intellect, Martineau introduced feminist sociological perspectives in her writing on otherwise overlooked issues such as marriage, children, domestic and religious life, and race relations.Publisher: Macmillan and Co.City: LondonYear: 1869Binding Style: HardcoverPagination: ix/445 pagesWidth: 5.75" Height: 7.75"Book Details: Condition / Notes: This is a scarce fist edition of this work singed and inscribed by American religious, civic and political leader John Wanamaker. Description: Title: The Works of David Ricardo with a Notice of the Life and Writings of the Author by J. R. McCullochAuthor: David Ricardo - David Ricardo was a British political economist and stock trader. He was often credited with systematizing economics, and was one of the most influential of the classical economists, along with Thomas Malthus, Adam Smith, and John Stuart Mill. He was also a member of Parliament, businessman, financier and speculator, who amassed a considerable personal fortune. Perhaps his most important contribution was the law of comparative advantage, a fundamental argument in favor of free trade among countries and of specialization among individuals. Ricardo argued that there is mutual benefit from trade (or exchange) even if one party (e.g. resource-rich country, highly skilled artisan) is more productive in every possible area than its trading counterpart (e.g. resource-poor country, unskilled laborer), as long as each concentrates on the activities where it has a relative productivity advantagePublisher: John MurrayCity: LondonYear: 1852Binding Style: HardcoverPagination: xxxiii/584 pagesWidth: 6.25" Height: 9"Book Details: Condition / Notes: Antique volume is bound in blind-stamped brown cloth, with gilt lettering to spine.
