Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: The Useful Arts, Considered in Connexion with the Applications of Science: With Numerous EngravingsAuthor: Jacob Bigelow - Bigelow was born in Sudbury, Massachusetts on February 7, 1787 (other sources claim 1786). Bigelow graduated from Harvard College in 1806 and then studied under John Gorham. He then graduated from the University of Pennsylvania medical school in 1810. He also studied under botantist Benjamin Barton. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1812.Bigelow taught medicine and botany at Harvard and published numerous books, including one of America's first botanical books, "American Medical Botany." His interest in mechanics led to his appointment as Rumford Professor, a position endowed at Harvard for the purpose of teaching the application of science to the useful arts, which he held from 1816 to 1827. His interest in mechanics and non-biological sciences was also illustrated by the publication of his "Elements of Technology" in 1829.Bigelow came up with the idea for Mount Auburn Cemetery as early as 1825, though a site was not acquired until five years later. Bigelow was concerned about the unhealthiness of burials under churches as well as the possibility of running out of space. With help from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Mount Auburn Cemetery was founded on 70 acres (280,000 m2) of land authorized by the Massachusetts Legislature for use as a garden or rural cemetery. It was dedicated in 1831 by Joseph Story, first president of the Mount Auburn Association.Bigelow died on January 10, 1879 and was buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery.Publisher: Harper & Brothers, PublishersCity: New YorkYear: 1847Binding Style: HardcoverNumber of Volumes: 2 Complete: YesWidth: 5" Height: 7.75"Book Details: Condition / Notes: Antique set is bound in blind-stamped brown cloth, with gilt lettering to spines. Lot 2275: David Douglas Duncan THE SILENT STUDIO 1976 First US Edition Photography Posthumous Tribute To Pablo Picasso Mougins Studio-Home

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: The Silent StudioAuthor: David Douglas Duncan - David Douglas Duncan is an American photojournalist and among the most influential photographers of the 20th century. He is best known for his dramatic combat photographs. His career as a photojournalist had its origin when he took photographs of a hotel fire in Tucson, Arizona where he was then studying archaeology at the University of Arizona. His photos included one of a hotel guest who made repeated attempts to go back into the burning building for his suitcase. That photo proved to be newsworthy when the guest turned out to have been notorious bank robber John Dillinger and the suitcase to have contained the proceeds of a bank robbery in which he had shot a police officer. Unfortunately, after turning the film over to the Tucson Citizen, the film was lost forever, and the photos never printed. After college, Duncan began to free lance, selling his work to journals such as The Kansas City Star, Life and the National Geographic Magazine. After Pearl Harbor Duncan joined the Marine Corps, earned an officer's commission, and became a combat photographer. After brief postings in California and Hawaii, he was sent to the South Pacific on assignment when the United States entered World War II. Though combat photographers are often close to the action, they rarely fight. However, in a brief engagement at Bougainville Island, Duncan found himself fighting against the Japanese. Duncan also covered the battle of Okinawa. Duncan would be on board the USS Missouri during the Japanese surrender. His war time photographs were so impressive that, after the war, he was hired by Life to join their staff upon the urging of J.R. Eyerman, Life's chief photographer. During his time with Life he covered many events including the end of the British Raj in India and conflicts in Turkey, Eastern Europe, Africa and the Middle East.Perhaps his most famous photographs were taken during the Korean War. He compiled many of his photos into a book called "This Is War!" (1951), with the proceeds going to widows and children of Marines who had been killed in the conflict. Duncan is considered to be the most prominent combat photographer of the Korean War.In the Vietnam War, Duncan would eventually compile two additional books "I Protest!" (1968) and "War Without Heroes" (1970). Here, Duncan stepped out of his role as a neutral photographer and challenged how the US government was handling the war.Aside from his combat photographs, Duncan is also known for his photographs of Pablo Picasso to whom he had been introduced by fellow photographer Robert Capa. Eventually, he was to publish seven books of photographs of Picasso. Duncan became a close friend of Picasso and was the only person allowed to photograph many of Picasso's private paintings. Duncan now lives in Valbonne, France, close to Mougins where Picasso spent his last 12 years.Greatly assisting Nippon Kogaku (Nikon) during their early years, in 1965 Duncan was presented with the 200,00th Nikon F built in recognition for his use and popularization of their camera. In 1966 he published "Yankee Nomad" a visual autobiography that collected representative photographs from throughout his career. In 2003 this was revised and published under the title of "Photo Nomad."Duncan traveled extensively in the Middle East, having been stationed there for 10 years as a Life photographer after World War Two. Roy Schatt JAMES DEAN: A PORTRAIT 1982 Author-Signed First Edition Photography Celebrity Hollywood Film Actor

Lot 2278: Roy Schatt JAMES DEAN: A PORTRAIT 1982 Author-Signed First Edition Photography Celebrity Hollywood Film Actor

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: James Dean: A PortraitAuthor: Roy Schatt - Roy Schatt was a New York photographer. Before he became a photographer, Roy Schatt studied painting with N.C. Wyeth and worked as a graphic artist for BBD&O on the Lucky Strike Hit Parade. Living in Greenwich Village in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Schatt met Jose Quintero who was directing Tennessee Williams' Summer & Smoke at the Circle-in-the-Square Playhouse. Roy's portraits of the cast went on display in the lobby and Harpers Bazaar and Vogue featured his portrait of Geraldine Page. During this period, Roy's numerous subjects included the likes of Rod Steiger, Patricia Neal, Budd Schulberg, Elia Kazan, Arthur Penn and Ben Gazzara. Schatt's subjects also include Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Billie Holiday, Steve McQueen, Marilyn Monroe, Tennessee Williams and many others. Although he is famous for photographing actors and other celebrities, Roy Schatt's work is the antithesis of glamour photography. He always sought out the "unguarded moment." Schatt was also an actor and his emotionally exposed style led to him being called the "Method" photographer because of the many parallels with the revolution that was then sweeping the acting world. Famed teacher Lee Strasberg recognized this kinship when he named Schatt theOfficial Photographer of the Actor's Studio. The James Dean pictures are undoubtedly the crowning achievement of Schatt's career. As he recalled many year's later, Schatt was mesmerized from almost the first moment they met: "He was a squinty schlump of a person all bent over. Then Dean suddenly got up and this ugly person became a dream, an Adonis who started to dance around the room. It was a transition I couldn't believe." Dean studied photography with Schatt and they became close friends.During the course of their yearlong friendship, Schatt and Dean formed a perfect photographer/subject relationship that resulted in many of the most popular images of Dean. "Dean was a method actor," Schatt explained, "being an actor, I was able to recognize that theatrical instinct. I would direct and provoke and the scenes would become inspiration. But the photograph still must be honest and interesting beyond the performance."(Biographical information courtesy of www.baranyartists.com)Publisher: Delilah BooksCity: New YorkYear: 1982Printing Information: Signed EditionBinding Style: Perfect BindingPagination: 143 pagesWidth: 8.75" Height: 11"Book Details: Condition / Notes: This is a scarce author-signed first edition.
