His ancestors include John Hathorne, the only judge involved in the Salem witch trials who never repented of his actions. Nathaniel later added a "w" to make his name "Hawthorne" in order to hide this relation. He entered Bowdoin College in 1821, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1824, and graduated in 1825. Hawthorne anonymously published his first work, a novel titled "Fanshawe," in 1828. He published several short stories in various periodicals which he collected in 1837 as "Twice-Told Tales." The next year, he became engaged to Sophia Peabody. He worked at a Custom House and joined Brook Farm, a transcendentalist community, before marrying Peabody in 1842. The couple moved to The Old Manse in Concord, Massachusetts, later moving to Salem, the Berkshires, then to The Wayside in Concord. "The Scarlet Letter" was published in 1850, followed by a succession of other novels. A political appointment took Hawthorne and family to Europe before their return to The Wayside in 1860. Hawthorne died on May 19, 1864, and was survived by his wife and their three children.Much of Hawthorne's writing centers on New England, many works featuring moral allegories with a Puritan inspiration. His fiction works are considered part of the Romantic movement and, more specifically, Dark romanticism. Description: Title: Walden or Life in the WoodsAuthor: Henry David Thoreau - Henry David Thoreau was an American author, poet, philosopher, abolitionist, naturalist, tax resister, development critic, surveyor, historian, and leading transcendentalist. He is best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay Civil Disobedience, an argument for individual resistance to civil government in moral opposition to an unjust state.Thoreau's books, articles, essays, journals, and poetry total over 20 volumes. Among his lasting contributions were his writings on natural history and philosophy, where he anticipated the methods and findings of ecology and environmental history, two sources of modern day environmentalism. His literary style interweaves close natural observation, personal experience, pointed rhetoric, symbolic meanings, and historical lore, while displaying a poetic sensibility, philosophical austerity, and "Yankee" love of practical detail. He was also deeply interested in the idea of survival in the face of hostile elements, historical change, and natural decay; at the same time he advocated abandoning waste and illusion in order to discover life's true essential needs. He was a lifelong abolitionist, delivering lectures that attacked the Fugitive Slave Law while praising the writings of Wendell Phillips and defending abolitionist John Brown. John Maynard Keynes A TREATISE ON MONEY 1930 First Edition

Lot 2066: John Maynard Keynes A TREATISE ON MONEY 1930 First Edition "The Pure Theory Of Money" Economics Nature & Value Fundamental Equations

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Title: A Treatise on MoneyAuthor: John Maynard Keynes - John Maynard Keynes, 1st Baron Keynes of Tilton in the County of Sussex CB, FBA was a British economist whose ideas have profoundly affected the theory and practice of modern macroeconomics, and informed the economic policies of governments. He built on and greatly refined earlier work on the causes of business cycles, and is widely considered to be one of the founders of modern macroeconomics and the most influential economist of the 20th century. His ideas are the basis for the school of thought known as Keynesian economics, as well as its various offshoots. In the 1930s, Keynes spearheaded a revolution in economic thinking, overturning the older ideas of neoclassical economics that held that free markets would, in the short to medium term, automatically provide full employment, as long as workers were flexible in their wage demands. Keynes instead argued that aggregate demand determined the overall level of economic activity, and that inadequate aggregate demand could lead to prolonged periods of high unemployment. He advocated the use of fiscal and monetary measures to mitigate the adverse effects of economic recessions and depressions. Following the outbreak of World War II, Keynes's ideas concerning economic policy were adopted by leading Western economies. During the 1950s and 1960s, the success of Keynesian economics resulted in almost all capitalist governments adopting its policy recommendations.Keynes's influence waned in the 1970s, partly as a result of problems that began to afflict the Anglo-American economies from the start of the decade, and partly because of critiques from Milton Friedman and other economists who were pessimistic about the ability of governments to regulate the business cycle with fiscal policy. However, the advent of the global financial crisis in 2007 caused a resurgence in Keynesian thought. Keynesian economics provided the theoretical underpinning for economic policies undertaken in response to the crisis by Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama of the United States, Prime Minister Gordon Brown of the United Kingdom, and other heads of governments. In 1999, Time magazine included Keynes in their list of the 100 most important and influential people of the 20th century, commenting that: "His radical idea that governments should spend money they don't have may have saved capitalism." In addition to being an economist, Keynes was also a civil servant, a director of the British Eugenics Society, a director of the Bank of England, a patron of the arts and an art collector, a part of the Bloomsbury Group of intellectuals, an advisor to several charitable trusts, a writer, a philosopher, a private investor, and a farmer.Publisher: Harcourt, Brace and CompanyCity: New YorkYear: 1930Printing Information: First EditionBinding Style: HardcoverPagination: xvii/363 pagesWidth: 6" Height: 8.75"Book Details: "A Treatise on Money" is a work on economics by English economist John Maynard Keynes. In the Treatise Keynes drew a distinction between savings and investment, arguing that where saving exceeded investment, recession would occur. Thus, Keynes reasoned that during a depression the best course of action would be to promote spending and to discourage saving.Condition / Notes: This is a scarce first edition of "The Pure Theory of Money," the first volume of "A Treatise on Money."Antique volume is bound in light brown cloth, with stamped lettering to spine. Bliven, Master of the whaling bark Elizabeth Smith, shown in the corresponding image(s). This unpublished work contains a title page bearing the typewritten title "Bark Elizabeth Swift - Long. George W. Bliven, Master" and a handwritten note in the upper left corner that reads "Not to be copied / in any way without / my permission. / Lillian Bliven." Preface provides the following information relating to the author and this text: Captain George W. Bliven had served as Master aboard the following ships; The Fanny - 1860 to 1865, The Nautilus, 1865 to 1868 (she was sold in Valpariso (sic), Peru (sic) in 1881), The Elizabeth Swift from 1868 to 1871. All these ships sailed out of New Bedford, Massachusetts. This log relates the final voyage of the Elizabeth Swift from the day she sailed from her home port at New Bedford, Massachusetts until the day she was crushed in the great ice jam, September 21, 1871, along with 29 other whaling vessels.
