Selection of eleven watercolours by F W Armstrong completed while studying at the Royal College of Art, London, 1895-1899 various seascapes, country scenes and flower studies all except one signed, three dated 22 by 14cm and smaller some with slight damage to edges where they were removed from mounting block; contained in plastic protective sleeve - Studio portrait photograph of F W Armstrong - Portfolio of anatomy notes with anatomical drawings prepared by Armstrong while studying - Box of 24 glass negatives half and double postcard size as prepared by J E Miller chemist and druggist, Grahamstown - Certificates in envelope awarded to Armstrong from (a) The Royal College of Art (b) Pretoria Society of Agriculture and Industries, 1923 Show Gold Medal Award (c) Diploma for Pottery, 1922 (d) similar award from the Central Agricultural Society, Bloemfontein, 1922 (e) Port Elizabeth Agricultural Society Show for Pottery, 1923 - Declaration of Peace Souvenir printed illuminated address by Armstrong for the Great War, 1919 - Pencil sketch of a nude woman, 1898, 67 by 33cm by Armstrong - Two large group photographs of the Royal College of Art, London circa 1898-9 Persons identified, 78 by 46cm - Framed photograph 42 by 43cm of the Working Model of the Victoria Falls exhibited by the Government of Southern Rhodesia at the Empire Exhibition, Johannesburg, 1936-1937 as designed and constructed by Professor Armstrong. Viewing recommended. Prof. Frederick William Armstrong was born in Durham, England in 1875. He studied at the Royal College of Art, London gaining his A.R.C.A. with distinction. In 1904 he came to South Africa to teach art at the Grahamstown Art School, exhibiting his paintings in Grahamstown, Springs and Bulawayo and his pottery (the first to be painted and glazed in South Africa) in Pretoria, Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth and at the Wembly Exhibition, London, where his work received a Gold Medal. His public commissions included a bust of Sir William Hoy that was in the Johannesburg Station foyer, a panel in high relief of Cecil Rhodes for the town hall of Bulawayo, the Grahamstown Settlers Memorial stained glass window (the first to be made in South Africa) for the Greathead Memorial Church Grahamstown, the chancel screen in St Bartholomew's Church Grahamstown, memorial plaques in St Andrew's College Chapel, Grahamstown. He designed the Grahamstown School of Art and the Victoria Falls and Zimbabwe exhibits at the Empire Exhibition, Johannesburg, 1936. He produced the first AA maps of the Eastern Province: illuminated addresses for the Royal Family on their visit in 1947 and for the Grahamstown Centenary. He taught survey graphics at Rhodes University and art at the Grahamstown Art School, Kingswood College and the Johannesburg Technical College. Some of his works were to be seen in the Grahamstown Council Chamber, Albany Museum and Art Gallery, Grahamstown. Armstrong may be regarded as the pioneer of pottery in South Africa. He died in 1968.
