Description: Ambrotype. Portrait of a Lady, c. 1850, early oval ambrotype by M J de Mouxy, Strand, London, showing a gentlewoman looking straight at camera, wearing a bonnet and gown, matted with de Mouxy's stamp on matt, framed and glazed, image size 75x60mm. An outstanding image. This is believed to be one of the very earliest ambrotypes - a process developed mainly for portraiture byArcher & Fry in 1851 as a cheaper alternative to Dageurrotypes: it was widely used between 1852 and 1890 but declined markedly after the introduction of the carte de visite in 1860.
