Description: Joseph Cartwright (British, 1789-1829) Views of Malta watercolour (two) h:35 w:53 cm Provenance: Private collection, Cambridge. Other Notes: Joseph Cartwright was appointed Paymaster-General in 1815 of the forces at Corfu, a post which afforded him ample opportunity to make sketches of the islands and coastlines of Greece, Italy, Corfu and Malta. Upon his return to England he published a volume entitled "Views in the Ionian Islands" and devoted himself to painting marine and naval subjects. In 1825 he was elected a member of the Society of British Artists, and in 1828 he was appointed marine painter to HRH The Duke of Clarence, Lord High Admiral of England, later King William IV.

Condition Report: Some browning to the sky and foxing spots to the one with the sailing ships. Dirt under the glass. Sizes are: 35 x 52cm 39 x 56cm.

Description: English School (19th Century) A View of Port Nicholson (now Wellington), New Zealand, from Government House, showing Mount Victoria and Mount Albert, and a Church in the foreground signed lower left with intiials and date of 1847 watercolour h:24 w:47 cm Other Notes: Wellington Harbour is the large natural harbour at the southern tip of New Zealand's North Island. New Zealand's capital, Wellington, is on the western side of Wellington Harbour. The harbour was officially named Port Nicholson until it assumed its current name in the 1980s. In Maori the harbour is Te Whanganui-a-Tara (the Great Harbour of Tara). Mount Victoria, locally abbreviated to Mt. Vic, is a prominent hill (height 196 metres) to the east of the centre of Wellington, New Zealand, and its associated suburb. To the south of it is a spur, Mount Albert, and the two are linked by a ridge. Mount Victoria's original Maori name is Tangi Te Keo.
