Theodoros Stamos, (1922 - 1997), Thaw, Oil on board, 23 1/2

Lot 223: Theodoros Stamos, (1922 - 1997), Thaw, Oil on board, 23 1/2" x 19 1/2"

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Theodoros Stamos (1922 - 1997) Thaw Oil on board Signed 'STAMOS' Lower Left. Provenance: - Leonard and Ruth Bocour by whom given to the Boyden Gallery at St. Mary's College in Maryland - Christie's New York, Rockefeller Plaza; 13-14 July 2004 - Acquired from above by present owner Complete with exhibition label from Betty Parsons Gallery, New York and later Valerie Carberry Gallery, Chicago. Includes Museum of Modern Art loan sticker. Underestimated at first by Clement Greenberg, New York critic whose commentary often decided the reputation of Abstract Expressionists, Greenberg later wrote: I scorched his show and I was wrong. You keep on learning." (Falk 3138) Of his painting, Stamos said: "The great figurative painters were involved with grandeur of vision, using the figure as a means to an end, whereas today the best of the abstrtact painters are also involved with a grandeur of vision using color as their means toward a new space-light." (Herskovic 318) Stamos was also an art educator and held positions at the Art Students League, Columbia University, Black Mountain College and Brandeis University. Stamos was born in Manhattan to Greek immigrant parents and studied sculpture for three years, 1936 to 1939, at the American Artist's School. In 1939, he turned to painting, and in this medium was basically self taught. With their amorphous shapes and busy lines, his first paintings resembled those of Mark Rothko, who became his close companion, and of William Baziotes. Stamos' colors were in tonal clusters, vague and undifferentiated. During the 1940s, Theodore Stamos ran a framing shop near Union Square where his customers included modernists Arshile Gorky and Fernand Leger. In 1943, he had his first solo show at Betty Parsons Gallery. Several years later, he began painting with distinct bands of color, usually black or very dark, and then in the 1950s, his work was much less controlled, more violent, emotive, and confrontational. In 1950, Theodore Stamos was the youngest artist to be included in the famous "irascibles" photograph of leading Abstract Expressionists. He began a "Sun Box" series in 1963 with shapes that took on enormous size, filling almost the entire surface of the canvas, with the suggestion of atmospheric light and organic expansion. In later years he lived between New York and the Greek Island of Lefkada. 23 1/2" x 19 1/2"

Franz Josef KLINE, (1910-1962), Untitled, Ink on paper, framed, 13

Lot 224: Franz Josef KLINE, (1910-1962), Untitled, Ink on paper, framed, 13" x 9 3/8" (sheet)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Franz Josef KLINE (1910-1962) Untitled Ink on paper, framed Signed Lower Left. Exhibited: - Forum Gallery, New York. Complete with exhibition label. - Provincetown Art Association, "Provincetown and Beyond: The Collection of John Raimondi", 2011 A member of the second generation of Abstract Expressionists, Franz Kline was a regular at the Cedar Tavern and friend to the Beat poets and writers, especially Jack Kerouac. With delicately balanced compositions featuring sweeps of black against a light ground, Kline contributed to the development of a gestural, calligraphic style of Abstract Expressionism. Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, in 1910, Kline spent much of the 1930s studying art in Boston and London. He increasingly pushed towards abstraction, rendering forms less decipherable with vigorous brushwork. In 1946 Kline started generalizing subjects into series of lines and planes, which produced semi-abstract Cubist-influenced paintings. During the next three years, a very dynamic and fluid handling emerged in Kline's work, and he produced a number of abstract studies in ink on paper. In 1949, Willem de Kooning enlarged some of these small drawings by projecting them, a process that suggested to Kline the dramatic impact such works could have at a larger size. In a landmark exhibition at the Charles Egan Gallery in New York in 1950, he exhibited his new, monumental works. Their rawness and gestural force established Kline as an innovator. The 1950s brought Kline commercial success as he exhibited in numerous group and solo shows. In 1956 he entered under contract with Sidney Janis—the impresario who championed the careers of Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko, and Philip Guston—a move that cemented his reputation. The same year, Kline reintroduced color into his paintings, which had been largely monochromatic since the mid- to late 1940s. In 1961, Kline fell ill and ceased painting. He died in 1962. 13" x 9 3/8" (sheet)

Bernard Buffet, (French; 1928 - 1999),

Lot 229: Bernard Buffet, (French; 1928 - 1999), "Le Yacht", Limited Edition print on canvas, 31 3/4" x 24"

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Bernard Buffet (French; 1928 - 1999) "Le Yacht" Limited Edition print on canvas by David and Carnier, exclusively for Saks Fifth Avenue. Inscribed and stamped on verso. Framed. Bernard Buffet was born in Paris, France on July 10, 1928. He entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1944 but worked mostly in solitude. He obtained an exhibition at the Gal. des Impressions d'Art in 1947 but attracted no attention. About that time he found his individual style and in 1948 won the Prix de la Critique jointly with Bernard Lorjou. After that he enjoyed the greatest acclaim of the younger French painters, becoming the most commercially successful French painter alive. He developed a highly mannered style immediately recognizable as his own. In sharp and spikey linear forms and with dismal greys and neutral tones he depicted emaciated figures and distorted still-lifes which seemed to express the existential and spiritual solitude of the postwar generation. Later, overwhelmed by commissions and success, his work became more stylized and decorative, losing in some measure its initial impact. He also did graphic work and book illustrations. His career culminated with a museum devoted to his work near Mishima, Japan, not in his native France. Buffet once used his mother's torn sheets as canvases. He had the most spectacular success, claiming that "wealth aids my creative spirit; poverty does not necessarily help genius." Among his famous friends was the novelist Francoise Sagan. Unfortunately, he suffered from Parkinson's disease and had been unable to work and on October 4, 1999 at his home in Var in southern France, he committed suicide. - Jean Ershler Schatz 31 3/4" x 24"
