The figure and costume appear to be in good condition though dirty. Some retouching may be masked by the heavy varnish. Lot 7: ANTWERP SCHOOL, (16TH CENTURY), ADORATION OF THE MAGI

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: ANTWERP SCHOOL (16th century) ADORATION OF THE MAGI Oil on shaped panel 35 3/8 x 23 1/2 in. (35.4 x 59.7cm) provenance: By family descent. Private Collection, New Jersey.

Condition Report: The panel exhibits a large center crack approximately vertical in orientation and a small crack one inch from the upper right extending 5 inches into the painting. The lower right and left corners have been replaced with additional damage to the lower left corner of the original panel. Four dowel-shaped 'plugs' are found in an approximately horizontal line 25 inches from the lower edge of the painting indicating an attempt to repair the panel. Flake losses are evident though the painting does not seem to be flaking at present. Lot 25: CORNELIS SPRINGER, (DUTCH 1817-1891), STREET SCENE WITH FIGURES

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: CORNELIS SPRINGER (dutch 1817-1891) STREET SCENE WITH FIGURES Signed with initials and dated 'CS 48' bottom left, oil on panel 17 1/2 x 14 1/8 in. (44.5 x 35.9cm) provenance: Private Collection, Pennsylvania.

Condition Report: This painting is in excellent condition. A fine vertical crack extends from the top edge, 6 1/8 inches from the left, 7 inches in to the painting with a slightly diagonal orientation. The crack is quite fine and is only a minor condition flaw. The painting exhibits a very fine, overall crackle pattern. The natural resin varnish is glossy and transparent. Examination in UV reveals only two minor dots of inpainting. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. JOHANN FREDERIK CORNELIS SCHERREWITZ, (DUTCH 1868-1951), HERDER WITH SHEEP

Lot 26: JOHANN FREDERIK CORNELIS SCHERREWITZ, (DUTCH 1868-1951), HERDER WITH SHEEP

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: JOHANN FREDERIK CORNELIS SCHERREWITZ (dutch 1868-1951) HERDER WITH SHEEP Signed 'J. Scherrewitz' bottom right, oil on canvas, 16 x 24 in. provenance: Private Collection, Maryland.

Condition Report: The painting has a distinctive crackle pattern with slight cupping that looks like concentric parenthesis emanating from a point at the center of the painting. Old losses in the sky have been broadly retouched without being filled. The retouching is easily detectable in visible light but appears yellow in UV and is therefore difficult to detect. Other campaigns of retouching in the sky and scattered elsewhere are more visible in UV. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. PIETER LODEWIJK FRANCISCO KLUYVER, (DUTCH 1816-1900), GATHERING TWIGS

Lot 27: PIETER LODEWIJK FRANCISCO KLUYVER, (DUTCH 1816-1900), GATHERING TWIGS

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: PIETER LODEWIJK FRANCISCO KLUYVER (dutch 1816-1900) GATHERING TWIGS Signed 'Kluyver' bottom left, oil on canvas 30 1/8 x 25 1/4 in. (76.5 x 61.3cm) provenance: A Private Collection, Pennsylvania.

Condition Report: This painting has an odd, slight lumpy texture that may result from its having been rolled or may be the result of a badly done glue lining in which the adhesive was spread with a comb and that texture transferred to the painting itself. A large, jagged, horizontal crack across the mid-section may be the result of a tear. Though there is not extensive cracking, that which exists seems to result from impact or damage rather than the typical finer crackle patterns seen as a result of age on most fabric supported paintings. Disfiguring remnants of an old dark varnish or possibly a soluble toning layer remain and are darker in the paint's interstices. Examination in UV revealed no repaint, but it does indicate a selective cleaning and suggests that the browns may be readily soluble and difficult to clean. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Lot 35: NARCISSE VIRGILE DIAZ DE LA PENA, (FRENCH 1807 - 1876), FONTAINEBLEAU FOREST

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: NARCISSE VIRGILE DIAZ DE LA PENA (french 1807 - 1876) FONTAINEBLEAU FOREST Signed 'N. Diaz' bottom left, oil on canvas 12 7/8 x 17 1/4 in. (32.7 x 43.8cm) provenance: Property from the Estate of William F. Heefner, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. note: We wish to thank Alexandra Murphy for her assistance in cataloguing this lot. This lot will be accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed by Ms. Alexandra Murphy and dated May 15, 2010

Condition Report: This painting has been glue lined and is delaminating in several small and very localized areas. These areas are bulging and quite out of plane. There is a small flake loss at the very top of the largest of the delaminating areas. The painting is almost black and illegible with a few very light highlights. Examination in UV reveals that this is the result of selective cleaning where the heavy natural resin varnish was removed only from the lightest of the highlights and left elsewhere. Careful cleaning by a qualified conservator should be able to bring the painting back into balance and legibility. There is no evidence of retouching though this could easily be masked by the heavy, old varnish. The painting exhibits a moderate amount of drying crackle. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid.
