Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: [Africa]. J.A.P.C.G. Naar den Congo. Een Reisverhaal van Rotterdam - M'boma door -. N.pl., n.publ. ("Gedrukt bij A. Hooiberg te Epe"), (1894), (6),41p., orig. gilt and blindst. cl., a.e.g., sm. 8vo. - Upper hinge partly split. Spine-ends trifle rubbed. Very fine copy. = Personal travel-account by an unidentified author "C.G.". Probably privately issued for a few companions or family members, finely produced and printed on high quality paper and well-written. All personal names are referred to in initials only. The journey starts July 25 1893 with the S.S. Koningin Wilhelmina, with a calm passing to Madeira, with the daily activities described in short (i.a. the spotting of some whales). The author is delighted about his one-and-a-half day visit to Madeira, which he considers a utopia ("Madeira zien en dan leven!"). After leaving Madeira two Portuguese stowaways are caught and forced to labour. On 12 August the passengers celebrate the crossing of the equator and 15 August they catch their first sight of the Congo ("(...) hoorden wij de kreet uit de wacht: 'Land, land, land, Cabinda in 't gezicht!'"). The next day they start cruising up the river Congo to arrive at Quissanga, where the passengers transfer to the much smaller stoombarkas "Prins Hendrik". The author however, finds the boat fully occupied, and gets to meet the Dutch in Quissanga, among whom is his future manager "S", "Chef der Beneden-Congo-afdeeling" and hears his posting will be the factory of M'Boma, to which he travels with the Moriaan, to arrive on 26 August. "Dagelijks komen hier eenige honderden negers met koopwaren. Die luitjes veroorzaken een drukte en een herrie, dat het verschrikkelijk is. Bij het uitbetalen wordt het zoo mogelijk nog erger. Die betaling geschiedt in allerhande, voor den neger nuttige en noodige waren en in luxe-voorwerpen." Extremely rare, no copies in NCC.

Frontcover loosening; corners, spine-ends and joints sl. rubbed. = Gay 3117; Mendelssohn I, p.867f; cf. Kainbacher I, p.83. The author, who was an English clergyman, artist, musician and composer, was a member of the Moravian Church and visited the Cape in 1815 to visit two Moravian missionary settlements in order to make an "arrangement with the Government of the Colony regarding the security of the Missionary Settlements" (Preface) and in order to find a suitable location for a third settlement for the United Brethren. The present work, first published in 1818, is based on the notes that Latrobe made during his journey for his family and friends. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE IV.

She was the first full-time woman traveller of all, and one of the very few who never felt the need to qualify her impulse: she travelled because she wanted to see the world, and saw no reason why she shouldn't. One of the many theories on what became of the dauphin of France, Louis-Charles (also known by the french Royalists as Louis XVII) after his shady death in prison in 1795. Many people claimed to be the dauphin after the French republic reverted to the monarchy. One of the more prominent pretenders was Eleazar Williams, an American-Canadian clergyman and spokesman for the Iroqois. This work explains in some detail the 'evidence' supporting his claim. In 2000, after DNA examination, it became clear that Louis-Charles had indeed died in a French prison in 1795. On the Williams-claim, cf. Sabin 30267.
