Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Voice in the Mirror (Universal International, 1958). Reynold Brown Original Artwork in Gouache (21.5" X 21") and Black and White Photo (16.5" X 20"). William Reynold Brown (1917-1991) was a prolific illustration artist whose work is admired as some of the leading poster art of the 1950s and 1960s. He created the poster campaign art for more than 275 films in his career and it included some of the most famous of the era. Included in this lot is a beautiful gouache painting for the six sheet to the film Voice in the Mirror starring Richard Egan and Julie London. The painting was done on paper and mounted to the layout with rubber cement. The same artwork was previously used for the one sheet and was most likely removed from that layout and placed onto this for the larger format. Included in the lot is an oversized photo used by the artist to create the three sheet format painting. That painting is shown in the book published in 2009 called "Reynold Brown: A Life in Pictures." The artwork in this lot was not known to have survived until consigned to us by a former employee of Universal Studio's advertising department, who rescued these from the trash bin in the 1960s. Very Fine.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Spartacus (Universal International, 1960). German Lobby Displays (7) (17.75" X 24"). So impressed with Stanley Kubrick on the set of Paths of Glory was Kirk Douglas that the star insisted Kubrick direct Spartacus. Douglas also hired Dalton Trumbo to write the script, breaking the ban on the Hollywood Ten that had been established during the McCarthy hearings on Anti-Communism. Never before offered through Heritage, these incredible German lobby displays showcase the masterful work of artist Reynold Brown. Each features a highly detailed and colorful portrait image of key actors in the film, including Kirk Douglas, Jean Simmons, John Gavin, Peter Ustinov, Laurence Olivier, Charles Laughton, and Tony Curtis. Upon production, the displays were backed on a board with two holes near the upper edge for hanging. They show some signs of use, including minor edge wear, corner bumps, light unobtrusive stains, and small border lifts. The Douglas display has a gouge in the image to the right of the title, Olivier has a small chip in the upper and lower border, and Ustinov has small scuffs in the title. Very Fine-.

The Alamo (United Artists, 1960). 24 Sheet (104

Lot 86095: The Alamo (United Artists, 1960). 24 Sheet (104" X 232

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The Alamo (United Artists, 1960). 24 Sheet (104" X 232"). This grand and glorious poster is the billboard format for the John Wayne directed and starring epic, The Alamo. Despite being a top-ten money maker for its 1960 release, and its popularity in Europe and Japan, the film could not recoup its massive budget in its initial release. John Wayne assumed huge personal debt to get the film finished at a budget of $12 million after United Artists refused to pay for cost overruns during production. It wasn't until the television rights sale in 1971 that Wayne's personal debts were finally paid off. Artist Reynold Brown's artwork is printed in its entirety, making it a grand size and one powerful display piece! The poster has small edge and fold chips, but nothing that distracts from this stirring depiction of the famous battle for independence of 1836. Folded, Fine/Very Fine.

Description: Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (Allied Artists, 1958). One Sheet (27" X 41.5"). Reynold Brown, a giant in the movie poster illustration world, was undoubtedly the right artist for rendering the colossal Allison Hayes, aka "The 50 Foot Woman." After being scratched by an alien, a jealous wife (Hayes) grows to enormous proportions, and takes out her anger in the form of an incredible and destructive rampage. This poster is one of the most sought after from 1950s science fiction cinema, and the example presented here is in exemplary condition. Touchup has been applied to the folds, pinholes in the corners, and a tiny chip in the right corner. Very Fine+ on Linen.

Monster on the Campus by Reynold Brown (Universal Inter

Lot 86275: Monster on the Campus by Reynold Brown (Universal Inter

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Monster on the Campus by Reynold Brown (Universal International, 1958). Signed Gouache on Board Painting (22" X 28.5"). A creative illustrator who adopted a realist style, Reynold Brown is one of the most influential artists in the world of movie posters. He produced magnificent works of art for over 250 films, including classics such as The Alamo, Spartacus, Ben-Hur, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, Tarantula, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Time Machine, and I Was a Teenage Werewolf. While working as an inker and drawer on the comic strip "Tailspin Tommy," Brown was encouraged by Norman Rockwell to quit the comics and seek out jobs as an illustrator. This led him to land jobs with North American Aviation in California, Boys' Life, Popular Science, and eventually as an instructor at Art Center College of Design, where he taught future movie poster artists Bob Peak and Drew Struzan. In 1951, Brown would meet Misha Kallis, an art director for Universal Pictures, ultimately leading to the creation of his first film poster,The World in His Arms. He continued to work on posters throughout the 1960s and into the early 1970s, creating iconic images that, in some cases, were more memorable than the films. Here is an original work by Brown for the Jack Arnold horror feature, Monster on the Campus. Brown's attention to detail and realistic style are evident, as each brush stroke is meticulous, showcasing the slightest of details. Note the intricacies of the image, such as the fur of the monster, the cracks in its fingernails, the hair on the frightened students, and even the stripes on the American flag in the background. This is an amazing work from a masterful illustrator. The painting has been signed in the lower right corner of the image by Brown. The lettering for the title is applied directly onto the painting and over the painting is the original plastic overlay, which has the credits and taglines strategically placed for the poster. The overlay shows chipping and cracking. There is tape and tape remnant from when the overlay was put on the board that does not affect Brown's work. Collectors will not want to miss this tremendous opportunity to add a unique piece from a brilliant artist to their collection. Very Fine.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The Monolith Monsters (Universal International, 1957). Six Sheet (79" X 81"). Starring Grant Williams, Lola Albright, and Les Tremayne, this 1950s sci-fi flick is an entertaining twist on the "mutating" creature-features of that decade. A meteor falls in the desert and spews thousands of black rocks from the crater. When it starts to rain, the rocks grow to immense size, topple, and start the process all over again. If anyone touches the rocks, they turn to stone themselves. Will the threatening monoliths take over the world? Touchup to the folds and small tears in the borders and top left. Light post-restoration horizontal creases. A Heritage first, this Reynold Brown-designed six sheet is one mammoth find! Fine/Very Fine on Linen.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The Time Machine (MGM, 1960). Poster (40" X 60"). For many fans, the name George Pal is synonymous with Hollywood science fiction. Pal's colorful, wildly imaginative interpretations of the works of H. G. Wells have become classics in their own right, and have probably inspired almost as many people as the original novels themselves. The Time Machine stars Rod Taylor as H. George Wells, who travels to the distant future to discover a world where humanity has divided into two distinct castes: the gentle Eloi and the brutal Morlocks. The 40" X 60" format lends an impressive scale to the awesome Reynold Brown artwork, making this one of the most striking posters for this title. Some edge wear and light overall creasing in the image area are the only signs of handling to note. Very Fine on Linen.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Revenge of the Creature (Universal International, 1955). Six Sheet (78" X 81"). Jack Arnold directs this first sequel to his own The Creature From the Black Lagoon with his usual verve. In this installment, the Gill Man is taken back to civilization, where he can mangle and maul even more people than before. This spectacular six sheet created by Reynold Brown is most similar in design and layout to the window card, and is one of the toughest posters to find on this title. Professional airbrushing was applied to the borders to address a bottom right tear/chip, and small chips in the right and bottom border. Touchup was applied to a long tear in the top border that extends in the "R" and one that extends into Gill Man's face, a crossfold chip, and a bit of vertical creasing. No "Creature" fan should be without this rare and monstrous masterpiece! Fine on Linen.

Description: House on Haunted Hill (Allied Artists, 1959). One Sheet (27" X 41"). Famed poster artist Reynold Brown aces this spine tingling one sheet, complete with a crazed Vincent Price clutching the tresses of a bodiless head and a noose wielding skeleton. The raven filled sky as the backdrop for what is clearly a haunted mansion, only slightly distracts the viewer from the dangling, flimsy negligee-wearing corpse. Five guests at Frederick Loren's (Price) party think they're going to make a quick ten grand by spending the night in Loren's house. The unwitting crew unfortunately learns that nothing in life is free when they begin to die, one by one. There are tape stains on the verso that do show through to the front, and very faint signs of handling. Folded, Very Fine.

Reynold Brown's great border art is an added bonus to this fantastic lobby card set. The title card has pinholes in the corners. The scene cards have pinholes in the borders and a few in the artwork, one card has grease pencil marks on the verso that don't affect the image, and all cards have a rubber stamp on the verso that does not bleed through to the front. Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: House on Haunted Hill (Allied Artists, 1959). Poster (40" X 60"). Vincent Price is absolutely priceless as a creepy owner of a spooky mansion in this spine-tingling 1950s fright fest. $10,000 is on the line for one of the five strangers challenged to survive just a single night in the eerie manse. Directed by William Castle and made on a tight budget - as were most of Castle's films - it was hugely successful. Artist Reynold Brown outdid himself in creating the perfect imagery for the film's posters, including this marvelous large format piece which is superior in many collector's minds as it is a richer, deeper image. There is a date stamp in the bottom border, edge wear, pinholes and creases in the borders, two tears in the top border with archival tape, tear in the bottom border that extends into the credits with paper tape on the verso (minor touchup), and tape stains along the top border on the verso that do not affect the image. Description: Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (Allied Artists, 1958). Insert (14" X 36"). Although the film was definitely drive-in material and only over time has it become a cult classic, the real star was the poster itself, with artwork by the incredible Reynold Brown. Allison Hayes towers over the highways, destroying everything in her path. This singular image has become an iconic graphic of the science fiction genre and is in constant demand in any format. This insert has been restored on linen to address pinholes in the borders, one pinhole in "Hudson," a bottom left corner chip, and a small chip in the top left corner. The borders have been airbrushed and there is a slight separation of the linen and the paper in top border. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Tarantula (Universal International, 1955). Three Sheet (41.5" X 80"). This flesh-crawling three sheet spotlights the towering arachnid of the 1955 thriller starring John Agar, Mara Corday, and Leo Carroll. Tarantula was released shortly after the success of another giant bug movie, Them, which featured enormous ants. Fans have held this film in high regard, mainly because of its strong opening and big finish, and particularly because of its impressive special effects. A live spider was used in filming, with air jets encouraging it which way to move over a miniature landscape. Even an uncredited Clint Eastwood shows up toward the end as a jet squadron leader attacking the giant eight-legged menace. Artist Reynold Brown captures the action superbly on the three sheet presented here, which has been restored on linen. Touchup has been applied to pinholes in the corners and borders, and some light overall wrinkling can be noted. Very Fine on Linen.

Description: Tarantula (Universal International, 1955). Half Sheet (22" X 28") Style A.
