Description: 'And there was a great cry in Egypt' signed and dated 'Arthur Hacker 97.' (lower left) oil on canvas 351/2 x 603/4 in. (90.3 x 154.3 cm.) PROVENANCE with the Fine Art Society, London, Victorian Paintings, 1977, no. 71. Anon. sale; Christie's, London, Important Symbolist Paintings and Drawings, 27 June 1988, lot 703 (œ12,000). LITERATURE Royal Academy Pictures, 1897, p. 151. Art Journal, 1897, p. 170 (illustrated p. 164). EXHIBITION London, Royal Academy, 1897, no. 23. NOTES The subject is taken from Exodus, Chapter XII, and depicts the Passover, the principal act that led Pharaoh to release the Jewish people from their captivity in Egypt. Moses, as God's instrument, had unloosed a series of plagues on Egypt with the intention of forcing Pharaoh to release the Jews from slavery. But after each plague Pharaoh only became more obstinate. Finally he was threatened with the death of the firstborn sons of all Egyptians, his own included. At the same time, the Jews were told to make specific preparations for their departure: they were to kill a lamb and with its blood make a mark, by tradition a tau-cross, on the door posts of their houses. They were then to eat the lamb. That night, the destroying angel came, but passed over the Jews whose houses were protected by the mark, and slew only the Egyptian firstborn. This disaster overcame Pharaoh's obstinacy, and he at last sent the Jews away to start their journey to the Promised Land. Arthur Hacker was an immensely versatile talent, who entered the RA Schools in 1876 and continued his studies in Paris in the atelier of L‚on Bonnat (1880-1). Like his fellow pupil Stanhope Forbes he was much influenced by French realism, and with him later went on to found the New English Art Club. A tour of North Africa with Solomon J Solomon in 1881 further influenced his art, and this fusion of influences led to the production of various dramatic pictures, of which the present is a prominent example. The Art Journal was favourably impressed by the picture, commenting: "Mr Arthur Hacker is possessed with a similar spirit to Mr Dicksee in endeavouring to avoid the danger of painting in a single groove. Scriptural or religious motive has still a fascination for him, but it cannot be said that this class of subject tempts him to adhere to the same technical methods of treatment. 'And there was a great cry in Egypt' for instance, presents a marked change from last year's daring study 'The Cloister of the World'. The figure of the destroying angel sweeping by the doomed city, sword in hand and face averted, is a majestic realisation of the dread missioner, even if the conception is more suggetive of a Fury or Valkyr rather than that of Azrael".
