Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: oil on boardPROVENANCELondon, J.S. Maas & Co.;Private CollectionCATALOGUE NOTEThis interesting sketch was almost certainly painted at the Langham Sketching Club, where members were judged on their efforts to represent a subject set at the start of the evening meetings. The subject was usually a single word and many of Dicksee's greatest pictures were conceived at the club, including Harmony (Tate), Chivalry (private collection), Memories (destroyed) and Reverie (Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool). The present sketch probably relates to The End of the Quest (Leighton House Museum), in which a young knight approaches an enthroned maiden.

Lot 82: Sir Francis Bernard Dicksee, P.R.A. (1853-1928)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Composition study for 'Chivalry' pencil, watercolour and bodycolour, with gum arabic and with scratching out 131/4 x 9 7/8 in. (33.6 x 25.1 cm.) PROVENANCE with The Maas Gallery, London, from whom acquired by the present owner in 1980. NOTES Dicksee was in the habit of working out his compositions in terms of watercolour sketches. Another example is the drawing for Romeo and Juliet that was offered for sale by Julian Hartnoll in 1986 (cat. no. 21). The finished picture, now in the Southampton Art Gallery, appeared at the Royal Academy in 1884, only a year before Chivalry was exhibited. This practice was closely related to Dicksee's early work as an illustrator. He used a similar watercolour-with-bodycolour technique for his designs for Romeo and Juliet and Othello when the plays were issued in Cassell's International Shakespeare in 1884 and 1890. In fact the Southampton picture is a re-working of the frontispiece to Romeo and Juliet.

Description: Portrait of Margaret, daughter of J.C. imThurn Esq. signed and dated 'FRANK DICKSEE/1904' (lower right) and with inscription 'Frank Dicksee Esq RA/3 Greville Place/St Johns Wood' (on an old label on the reverse) oil on canvas 36 x 28 in. (91 x 71 cm.) PROVENANCE Commissioned by the sitter's parents; by descent. LITERATURE The Royal Academy Illustrated, 1904, p. 119 (illustrated). EXHIBITION London, Royal Academy, 1904, no. 376. NOTES Miss Margaret imThurn was painted at the request of her parents John Conrad, a banker, and Sarah Maria imThurn. Margaret was the second of eight children and the eldest and purportedly the most beautiful of the four daughters. One of her brothers became a Vice Admiral and served on H.M.S. Hood when first commissioned. Her uncle was Sir Everard imThurn, the Governor of Ceylon, Fiji and British Guiana. Dicksee came from an artistic family; his father, Thomas Francis Dicksee, his uncle, brother and sister were all painters and exhibited at the Royal Academy. Like many other artists of the time, they lived in Bloomsbury, where Dicksee attended the Rev. George Henslow's school. After a year working with his father, he entered the RA Schools in 1870, being taught by Millais and Leighton and proving a model student who won gold and silver medals. He also had a formative period assisting Henry Holiday with stained glass. In the 1870s and 1880s much of his creative effort was chanelled into illustration, both for magazines - Cassell's, the Cornhill, the Graphic, etc - and books, notably Longfellow's Evangeline (1882) and two editions of Shakespeare's plays (1883-92), all published by Cassell's. A number of these designs were later developed as easel paintings. He began to exhibit at the RA in 1876, and it was always his spiritual home, although he supported the Grosvenor Gallery and other institutions. His name was made with Harmony (Tate), exhibited in 1877; a winning combination of sentimental theme, 'aesthetic' decor and academic technique, it was hailed as the 'picture of the year' and became one of the first works bought for the Chantrey Bequest. He was elected ARA in 1881 and RA ten years later. In addition to literary and historical subjects, he specialised in scenes of social drama such as The Crisis (1891; Melbourne) and The Confession (1896; private collection). Many of his pictures were widely disseminated through engravings, and in 1900 he scored another great success with The Two Crowns (Tate), which again became a Chantrey purchase. However, the fashion for such costume pieces was waning, and increasingly he turned to portraiture and landscape. Never marrying, he settled in 1898 at 3 Greville Place in St John's Wood, then so popular with academic artists. In later years he received many honours, both at home and abroad. The climax of his career was his election as PRA in 1924 in succession to Sir Aston Webb. He held the post with distinction and tact, and it brought him a knighthood in 1925 and a KCVO two years later.

Description: THE JUDGMENT OF SOLOMON signed and dated "FRANK DICKSEE 97" (lower left) oil on canvas, grisaille 11 3/4 x 16 in. (30 x 40.7 cm.) The purpose of this monochrome painting in unclear. It has the effect of an illustration and Dicksee was certainly a prolific illustrator, working for Cassell's Magazine, the Cornhill and the Graphic in the 1870s, and producing plates for Longfellow's Evangeline (1882) and two editions of Shakespeares's plays (1883-92). However, whether our painting is also an illustration may be questioned. The technique is unusual, most of Dicksee's illustrations being in gouache, and he did not apparently illustrate the Bible. In any case the picture's date, 1897, is rather late for him to be involved in work of this kind. He seems to have put illustration behind him about the time that he became a full Academician in 1891.
