Lot 4: CIRCLE OF JAN BAPTIST WEENIX THE YOUNGER, (DUTCH 1640-1719), TROPHIES OF THE HUNT
Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data
Description: CIRCLE OF JAN BAPTIST WEENIX THE YOUNGER (dutch 1640-1719) TROPHIES OF THE HUNT Oil on canvas 38 x 32 in. (96.5 x 81.3cm) provenance: Property of a Midwestern Museum.
Condition Report: The painting has been glue lined onto a pre-primed canvas and stretched on what is presumably its original stretcher, now modified with a modern, plywood cross-member. It is slack and undulates on the stretcher with corner draws in the upper left corner. The painting exhibits age crackle over all. Though some of the paint is cupped and tented, it is stable. There is some minor dirt and staining in the paint layer. In UV there painting exhibits a heavy green fluorescence indicating a thick layer of a somewhat aged natural resin varnish. There is little retouching. In visible light that varnish is moderately discolored and has poor saturation. The painting would benefit greatly from cleaning. It is in very nice condition for a painting of its age. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by Freeman's Conditions of Sale.

Description: A hunting still life with a dead hare, a hind, a brace of partridge and other birds with a spaniel, a gun, and a powder horn by a classical urn, a hunt servant and a staghound beyond oil on canvas 87 x 781/4 in. (221 x 198.7 cm.) NOTES Son and pupil of his father, Jan-Baptist Weenix (1621-1660/1), the artist's early activities in the 1660s and 70s were largely concerned with the production of Italianate landscapes and harbour scenes in a style reminiscent both of his father and Nicolaes Berchem. After around 1680, Jan abandoned these subjects in favour of flower pieces and the hunting still lifes for which he is best known. Along with his cousin Melchior d'Hondecoeter, who painted similar hunting still lifes, their pictures became highly prized in the seventeenth century. By the outset of the eighteenth century the genre had become increasingly popular for stately decorations. From circa 1702 to 1714 Weenix served as court painter to the Elector Palatine Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz of D쳌sseldorf, for whom he painted twelve large hunting scenes designed as wall panels for the Elector's lodge, Schloss Bensberg, near Cologne (Munich, Bayerische Staatsgem„ldesammlungen). Goethe, when he saw the series in situ in 1774, claimed that Weenix had surpassed nature in visually rendering every tactile value of the subject.

Description: PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTIONSTILL LIFE OF GAME, INCLUDING A HARE, GREY PARTRIDGES, A PIGEON, A MUSKET, A POWDER BAG, TRAPPING NETS AND SUMMER FLOWERS BEFORE A STONE FRIEZE, THE WATER GARDENS OF A VILLA BEYONDmeasurements note112 by 94.5 cm.; 44 by 37 1/4 in.signed and dated upper right on the stone frieze: J.Weenix/ f.1703labelled with inventory number lower left: 36oil on canvas, extended by 8cm. along the top edge, in a fine English carved and gilt wood framePROVENANCEPurchased by Sir John Thorold, 9th Bt. (1734-1807), of Syston Park, Lincolnshire;Thence by descent until sold in these Rooms, 8 July 1999, lot 31, where purchased by the present owner (for £270,000).NOTEBy the first decade of the eighteenth century Weenix was at the height of his powers and firmly established as the dominant exponent of the game-piece in Holland. For much of this period (1702-14) Weenix was Court painter to the Elector Palatine, Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz at Schloß Bensberg near Düsseldorf for whom he painted the twelve large hunting scenes designed as wall panels for the hunting lodge at Schloß Bensberg (now in the Bayerische Staatgemäldesammlungen, Munich). Goethe, when he saw these in situ in 1774, claimed that Weenix had surpassed nature in visually rendering every tactile value of his subject. As Sullivan has observed (S.A. Sullivan, The Dutch Game Piece, New Jersey 1984, pp. 61-2), the refinement and elegance of Weenix's work at the turn of the century clearly reflected the growing influence of French taste upon Dutch art. The elegant gardens and statuary in the background, for example, are already present in a Game Piece of 1682(?) in the Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe (Sullivan, op. cit., fig. 124). The classical frieze depicted here was another of these elements, and may have been derived from paintings of his father, Jan Baptist Weenix.

Lot 30: WEENIX, Jan (1642-1719)
Description: WEENIX, Jan (1642-1719) Nature morte au renard Oil on canvas Signed and dated on the middle: J Weenix 1690 «Voilà le miroir où la nature nous présente ce que l'avenir nous réserve après la mort.» Lucrèce Specialised in the game still lives, Jan Weenix was largely collected and was renowned within and beyond the United Provinces during the Gold Century. His compositions are inhabited by dead poultry and others hanging up animals around which are positioned fruits and flowers. True to reality in its minor detail, they have a strong impact due to their aestheticism and their mute balance: an invitation to meditate on life's fleetingness. Our painting is a good illustration of his work. The fox is depicted stone dead, alike a hunting trophy; a blood trickle flows from his mouth; the tree-trunk's track appears as a wound. Beside the rotting carcass, wild plants; in the background, a city from the North as proved by the belfry. The whole acts as a memento mori: the vision of death in the undergrowth remind us that life and civilized relationships are artificial and faddish. Following a tradition that dates back to the 4th and the 3rd centuries before Christ with the rhopographies and rhyparographies of Piraïkos, Jan Weenix masters the rules of still life as determined by Charles Sterling: mimesis and symbolic. Description: A trompe l'oeil casement with a boy and a monkey, a formal Italianate garden beyond with signature 'J Weenix f.' (lower right) oil on canvas 54 x 46 1/8 in. (137.2 x 117 cm.) NOTES We are grateful to Mr. Fred Meijer of the R.K.D. who has confirmed the attribution on the basis of a transparency (written communication, 18 May 2001). He suggests a dating of after 1700 and points out the rarity of such a prominent figure in this type of picture by the artist. Jan was the son of the painter Jan Baptist Weenix, whose influence is readily apparent in his early oeuvre, which concentrates on Italianate genre scenes set in landscapes or exotic ports. After 1680, Jan turned mainly to painting still lifes of dead game and birds, for which he is best known. This genre became increasingly popular and Jan served as court painter to the Elector Palatine Johann Wilhelm of Dusseldorf, for whom he painted twelve large hunting scenes for the Elector's lodge, Schloss Bensberg, near Cologne.
