Lot 64: VICTOR PASMORE(1908-1998) Untitled, Abstract

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: VICTOR PASMORE(1908-1998) Untitled, Abstract Composition Etching, 37 x 37.5cm (14.5 x 14.75") Signed in pencil with monogram and inscribed p/p; Victor Pasmore, the British painter and printmaker was born in Chelsham, Surrey in 1908 and died in Malta in 1998. Pasmore was educated at Harrow for a short time where he began to develop his interest in painting. He worked as a clerk at the Head Office of the London County Council for ten years and pursued his artistic interests in his spare time, through evening classes at the Central School of Art and weekend exhibitions. He became a member of the London Artists Association in 1932 and his art took a leading role in his life from that point on. His early studies of Impressionism are evident though his free handling of still life subjects, which progressed to abstraction. He is considered to be a pioneer in developing abstraction in post-war Britain.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Victor Pasmore, "Linear Motif" relief painting with gravure and oil on plastic and panel, 1967. Initialed, signed, and dated en verso, "VP Victor Pasmore 1967". Panel: 48"H x 48"W. Provenance: Marlborough Fine Art, London; Acquired from above in January 1986; Estate of Mary Jo Vaughn Rauscher, Dallas, TX. Literature: Alan Bowness and Luigi Lambertini, "Victor Pasmore: A Catalogue Raisonne of the Paintings, Constructions, and Graphics, 1926-1979", Rizzoli: New York, 1980, pg. 309, illustrated pg. 308. Marlbourgh-Gerson Gallery, catalog by Dennis Duerden, "Victor Pasmore: The Space Within, New Paintings and Constructions", Marlbourgh-Gerson Gallery: New York, 1967, pg.12. Exhibited: Marlbourgh-Gerson, New York, 1967. Arts Council of Great Britain. Cartwright Hall, Bradford, February 2-March 1980. Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, March 15-May 11 1980. Sainstbury Centre, UEA, Norwich; May 20-June 1980 Leicestershire Museum & Art Gallery, Leicester une21-July 20 1980. Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne, July 26-August 25 1980. Diploma Galleries, Royal Academy, London; September 19-October 1980 Note: Alan Bowness remarks, "The projective reliefs of 1954-1966 demonstrate clearly Pasmore's new ideas of a space-time continuum. The spectator needs to move in order to see the work, and because of the projecting forms and the way they are colored and lit, the painting changes as we view it. Although we know intellectually that the art object is static and determined, our senses tell us that it is variable and undetermined. Again, there is a creative tension built into the work by the artist, a dialectic established that invites further experiment towards resolution." (Alan Bowness and Luigi Lambertini, "Victor Pasmore: A Catalogue Raisonne of the Paintings, Constructions, and Graphics, 1926-1979," Rizzoli: New York, 1980.)
