The man in the chair’s face has been blocked out with a red circle, and both have a green line drawn through their centers, connecting the two otherwise independent images. From the artist’s “A Suite of Five Lithographs for Tristam Shandy”, the subject is the main character in a humorous novel by Laurence Sterne. Executed in 1988, this color lithograph is signed and numbered eight from an edition of fifty. Published by Arion Press, San Francisco, the work has full margins with deckled edges. It measures 21 ¼ x 25 ¼ inches. Glue remains verso from previous mounting, otherwise in good condition with no evidence of tears, toning, stains or repairs. John Baldessari (American, b. 1931)American conceptual artist John Baldessari is known for his exploration of the multifaceted interpretations of cultural iconography. By fusing text, painting and photography to create these complex compositions that often create absurd juxtapositions, Baldessari is one of the most prominent artists of the 20th century. In 2009 he was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale, the art worlds highest honor, and he has been the subject of many critically acclaimed retrospectives, including the 2010 show "John Baldessari: Pure Beauty."
