Fifth state (of 6). Printed by Delâtre, Paris. From L'Artiste. Ex-collection Prandi, blind stamp lower right (not in Lugt). A superb, richly-inked impression with very strong contrasts. Based on Manet's same-titled painting, 1861, now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. When it was first exhibited, at the Paris Salon of 1861, it brought him his first major critical success, which created a demand for the etched version. Guérin 16; Harris 12.

Second state (of 3), likely a proof impression pulled sometime between the Cadart editions of 1862 and 1874 (the former was printed on cream laid papers with Hudelist, Aquafortiste or Hallines watermarks; the latter was printed on Japon paper) but not part of the Manet edition of 1863, which was printed on China paper, and before the 1894 Dumont and 1905 Strölin editions. A superb, richly-inked impression with all the details distinct, with crisp, partially inky plate edges and with the uncleaned left and lower right edges. Guérin 26; Harris 20.
