He studied at the Liverpool Polytechnic between 1985 and 1986 and then at Goldsmiths College, London, from 1986 to 1988. Already as a participant of the exhibition ‘Freeze’ (1988) Hume caught the interest of art critics as well as of the influential collector Charles Saatchi. Together with Sarah Lucas, Damien Hirst and others he was soon part of the Young British Artists, who quickly dominated the British art scene of the 1990s. He was awarded the Jerwood Painting Prize in 1997 and was the representor of Great Britain at the Venice Biennale of 1999. That same year, Whitechapel Gallery in London held a solo exhibition of his work. Hume is a member of the Royal Academy since 2001.
