Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Bronze with brown patina and bas-relief, granite England, 1848 Edward William Wyon (1811-1885) - English sculptor, engraver and medallion maker Inscribed to the edge 'E. W. Wyon, Dest & Sculpt 1st Jan' 1848' Bronze bas-relief roundel mounted on granite slab Overall diameter: 19 cm Very good condition This bronze figure was originally made by English artist Edward William Wyon in 1848. The artwork consists of a bronze roundel in bas-relief and a round granite slab upon which the bronze is mounted. The obverse depicts in great detail a mythological scene within a garden setting. Presumably this is the representation of Amor hovering above Psyche. On the other hand this could be Oberon and Titania from A Midsummer Night's Dream. On the reverse is another bas-reliefed bronze, this time however, it is a small medallion that shows Cupid. This could be some sort of seal or maker's mark. The edge of the bronze roundel is inscribed with 'E. W. Wyon, Dest & Sculpt 1st Jan' 1848'. The piece is in a very good condition with minimal signs of age and wear. The surface is minimally tarnished in places. The maximal height is 4 cm. The overall diameter measures 19 cm, while the bronze roundel itself is 17.5 cm. (nlu) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

The only son of George Stephenson, the "Father of Railways", he built on the achievements of his father. Robert has been called the greatest engineer of the 19th century.Robert was born in Willington Quay, Northumberland, to George and Frances née Henderson, before they moved to Killingworth, where Robert was taught at the local village school. Robert attended the middle-class Percy Street Academy in Newcastle and at the age of fifteen was apprenticed to the mining engineer Nicholas Wood. He left before he had completed his three years to help his father survey the Stockton and Darlington Railway. Robert spent six months at Edinburgh University before working for three years as a mining engineer in Colombia. When he returned his father was building the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, and Robert developed the steam locomotive Rocket that won the Rainhill Trials in 1829. He was appointed chief engineer of the London and Birmingham Railway in 1833 with a salary of £1,500 per annum. By 1850 Robert had been involved in third of the country's railway system. He designed the High Level Bridge and Royal Border Bridge on the East Coast Main Line. With Eaton Hodgkinson and William Fairbairn he developed wrought-iron tubular bridges, such the Britannia Bridge in Wales, a design he would later use for the Victoria Bridge in Montreal, for many years the longest bridge in the world. He eventually worked on 160 commissions from 60 companies, building railways in other countries such as Belgium, Norway, Egypt and France.

Description: The Princess after an illustration from Tennyson's The Princess - 1847, within an ebonised frame, signed and inscribed 'E.W. Wyon/THE PRINCESS/Tennyson' 183/4 in. (37.5 cm.) high; 233/4 in. (60 cm.) wide PROVENANCE with J. Davey and Sons, Liverpool. C.L. Fisher. Anon. sale, Sotheby's Belgravia, 6 September 1978, lot 115. with The Fine Society, London, from whom acquired by the present owner in 1984. EXHIBITION Victorian and Edwardian Decorative Art: The Handley-Read Collection, 1972, B119. NOTES Lord Alfred Tennyson (1809-92) was considered England's greatest poet in the last half of the 19th century. Alfred Tennyson was born in Somersby, Lincolnshire on 6 August 1809, the fourth of 12 children. His grandfather was a member of Parliament and his father, the Reverend George Clayton Tennyson, was the rector of a Somersby parish. At the age of 12 young Tennyson wrote a 6,000 line epic. In 1827 he and his brother Charles published a volume of their early poetic efforts, Poems by Two Brothers. The next year Alfred went to Trinity College at Cambridge. There he became a close friend of Arthur Hallam. In 1829 he was awarded a medal for his poem Timbuctoo. Tennyson's father died in 1831, and he was forced to leave Cambridge. In 1833 he published a volume of poems that included his famous The Lotus-Eaters and The Lady of Shalott. That same year Hallam died and grief-stricken, Tennyson turned to questions of death, religious faith, and immortality in a series of short poems. These were eventually linked together in the great elegy In Memoriam, published in 1850. By 1837 Tennyson's financial affairs were in such poor shape that he had to put aside his plan to marry Emily Sellwood. The best of his earlier poems and some new ones - Ulysses and Locksley Hall - were published in a two-volume edition in 1842. Despite being regarded as the chief young poet of the day, his income was still too small to permit marriage. The Princess (1847) supported women's rights and was well received by the public and his aforementioned work In Memoriam was an immediate success. When he began to receive Royalties from these he was able to marry Sellwood in 1850. They bought a home and farm on the Isle of Wight and had three children. Tennyson was named Poet Laureate in 1850. The Princess is a comedy, and is almost ironic in its perception of marriage. Wyon has chosen to depict the central character Princess Ida who struggles with concepts of feminity and her relationship with man: "Ask me no more: thy fate and mine are sealed: I strove against the stream and all in vain: Let the great river take me to the main." Overcome by the powerful forces against her, the heroic Ida sadly accepts her fate and abandons all resistance. SALESROOM NOTICE Please note this is a silvered-metal relief plaque within an ebonised frame.
