Description: Ballpoint-Pen, colored crayon and silver point on (hotel letter) paper Martin Kippenberger (1953-1997) - Painter, sculptor, photographer and performance artist Germany, 1991 Signed with monogram and dated with pen lower right "M. K. 91" Overall dimensions: 29.5 x 20.7 cm Very good condition Provenance: German private collection Literature: Catalogue of the Hotel-drawings, 'Martin Kippenberger, "Hotel Hotel"', Köln 1993, p. Kippenberger's 'hotel drawings' deserve a special mention within the artist's oeuvre. In 2013, a selection of them was exhibited as part of the Kippenberger retrospective at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin; the auction record of these works on paper amounts to almost 42,000 Euros The present drawing was executed on letter paper, which was available at the Hotel Grand Lundia in 1991. It depicts an abstract formation of lines and circles, crossed by the red colored words "Faule Sau" (= "Lazy Slob") on top. The work reflects the artist's constant drive to express his thoughts and artistic ideas at all times and possible locations. Martin Kippenberger spent a lot of time travelling around the world. Since canvases and painting utensils were not necessarily always at hand, the artist needed a useful and easily available equivalent, which he found in the letter paper of his places of residence. This explains why Kippenberger's 'hotel drawings' are rated as one of his most important sources of inspiration. The work is in very good condition with only minimal traces of use. It is slightly kinked at the edges. The artist has signed and dated his work lower right "M.K. 91". It measures 29.5 x 20.7 cm. Martin Kippenberger (1953-1997) The German artist Martin Kippenberger was quite a provocative public personality and was renowned for his extreme positions in different styles and media. Between 1971 and 1976, he studied at the Academy of Arts in Hamburg, where he encountered a great variety of artists such as Sigmar Polke (1941-2010). In 1978, Kippenberger moved to Berlin and founded the exhibition space "Kippenbergers Büro" in cooperation with the German gallerist Gisela Capitain. Kippenberger's works were presented at numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale in 1988 and the documenta X in Kassel. Examples of his works are located at the K21 Kunstsammlung NRW in Dusseldorf, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne and the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. Description: On the bronze titled 'I AM LONELY'. Edition Matthias Buck und Christian Nagel, Munich. One of 5 artist's copies aside from the numbered edition of 10. Each varies in its composition and dimensions. Unique work. „The editions and multiples create, as it were, a bridge by which the concept of reproduction and its role gain access to all the other media domains of Kippenberger's art. As a concept, reproduction always has a double meaning for him: not only the uniqueness and originality of the specific art object are being addressed, but also the general possibility, or impossibility, for an artist to create something out of nothing, to create something new. The idea that mechanical reproduction and its technical possibilities could signify the end of the work of art is hereby reversed. It is often the copy or the edition that first makes something into art which, so to speak, makes the trait visible that identifies it as such. Reproductions, duplications and copies are needed, as is the work's title, to form a context in which an artwork can actually evolve. The uncommented single object, with all its contradictions and relations, cannot at all develop the latitude that Kippenberger needs to position or to activate his art." Kunstverein Braunschweig e.V., Köln 2003, p.11) Play pen, bronze and hammer paint

Lot 4246: Kippenberger, Martin: Self-Portrait

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Self-Portrait. 1976. Unique polaroid color print. 11 x 9 cm. Copyrighted, dated and annotated by Martin Kippenberger in ink in lower margin. Dedicated: "Wiss Laf - Eim Wejting". Martin Kippenberger studied at the Hamburg Fine Art Academy (1972 - 1976) where Sigmar Polke, despite not teaching him directly, strongly influenced him. The photograph offered here, was a present to Kippenberger's girlfriend at the time and was taken before he went to Florence after his studies. It bears the personal dedication: "Wiss Laf - Eim Wejting". This photographic object shows that Kippenberger's irrepressible creative drive was even present in his small personal gifts and messages. In 1978 he moved to Berlin where he founded "Kippenberger's Büro" with Gisela Capitain to exhibit young unknown artists. He also became the business director of SO 36, Berlin's famous performance, film and music space. In the 1980s exhibitions in Paris, Darmstadt, Düsseldorf, etc. followed. In 1988 he took part in the Biennale in Venice and in 1997 at the Documenta X in Kassel, where he and his work were classified as part of "Die Neuen Wilden" movement. His early death in 1997 was a result of his excessive lifestyle. - In near excellent condition. Provenance: From the artist to the present owner.

Description: 1953-1997CAPRI BY NIGHTmeasurements50 by 60cm.alternate measurements20 by 24in.oil on canvasExecuted in 1982.PROVENANCEPrivate Collection (acquired directly from the artist)Acquired from the above through Phillips de Pury & Co. in 2002NOTESince the beginning of aesthetic Modernity, artists have been attracted to things that lie just beyond the traditional confines of their isolated world as a means of loading their art with pseudo scientific, religious and historical themes. Sigmar Polke and Joseph Beuys had extended the scope of this strategy considerably during the 1960s and 70s, and it is against this background that the recurring, seemingly banal motifs that appear in Kippenberger's work should be examined.A symbol of affordable luxury and masculine power synonymous in Germany during the 1980s with the not-really-rich, the Ford Capri is a regular motif in Kippenberger's work. Simultaneously glamorous and degenerate and embodying the misery of social status symbols, Capri by Night is painted with all the exotica of a crime photo. The black and white palette and the 50x60cm. canvas both recall the artist's Uno do Voi series of 1976 in which Kippenberger painted a miscellany of everyday subjects as a means of providing a visual diary of his time in Florence. This is visually contrasted by the green half of the composition, which as if viewed through night vision lens, provides a visual reference to the title of work and a mocking acknowledgment the quasi-scientific range of subjects seen in the work of Polke and Beuys. Capri by Night epitomises the crux of Kippenberger's Capri concept. The striking vertical division here refers to one of his sculptures, Blaue Lagune, in which he sawed up a blue Ford Capri into pieces and hung them in a gallery. The painterly surface and title refer to an installation by Kippenberger and Albert Oehlen (fig. ???) in which they painted a Capri car with porridge oats. Intended as a satirical interpretation upon the retrogressive material aesthetic of Anselm Kiefer, Kippenberger and Oehlen's Capri by Night put the focus clearly on the here and now. Like the Uno di Voi, Kippenberger's Capri series transforms the banal into art and vice --versa and reflects the free for all naïvety with which he approached his art.

I deal in ideas. I am far more to people than just someone who paints pictures." (Martin Kippenberger in Roberto Ohrt, Kippenberger, Cologne 1997, inside front cover)By its many turns deeply complex, consciously provocative and cheekily evasive, Martin Kippenberger's multifaceted art was deliberately preoccupied with the mechanics of style as a reference to society. Coming to prominence in the early 1980's, Kippenberger became one of the initiators of the pictorial iconoclasm of the so-called "wild painting". Contesting the pre-dominant Neo-Expressionist belief in the meaningfulness of the spontaneous action of painting, Kippenberger developed an elaborate concept of aesthetics based on bad taste where the trivial and the subcultural become as influential on his working practice as the masterpieces of art history. In his ongoing deconstruction of accepted, fixed positions of content and style in art, Kippenberger's development of a wide variety of emphatically "unacceptable" subjects in his oeuvre allowed him to pursue a programmatic and inter-contextual "stylelessness". Often sparked off by the banality of life, by politics, media and advertising, for Kippenberger there was no subject which could not be turned into art.In the case of Die Frau ist die gefahrlichste Waffe der Wohnung, it seems more than likely that Kippenberger's point of departure was the chance encounter with the label which is now attached to the painting and forms the title of the work. As with much of the work he created in the early to mid eighties, Kippenberger here picks up on the controversial propagandistic tone of the label, the underlying subversive threat, and uses it as a basis for a deeper examination into the nature of middle-class society. Reacting against the stereotypical representations of superficial happiness and prosperity as seen in the television commercials of his childhood in the fifties, Kippenberger has here turned the comfortable, dependent housewife into a pregnant monster of a doll. Writ large across the multi-panelled, collapsible canvas with her vacuum cleaner in hand and cigarette in her receptacle-shaped mouth, the upstanding, hieratic figure of the doll has become an ominous symbol for the degradation of family values, for the flip side of life. [Ab]using the virtuous, painterly language of Expressionism, the magnificent fluidity and eloquence of the depiction and the imposing dedication to style and image, only serve to heighten this witty deconstruction of modern-day innocence, honesty and trust.

Description: 1953-1997FALSCHES ZEICHEN DER LORD JIM LOGEmeasurements130.5 by 120cm.alternate measurements51 3/8 by 47 1/4 in.acrylic paint, silicon and stickers on canvasExecuted in 1985.PROVENANCEGalerie Max Hetzler, CologneAcquired directly from the above by the present ownerNOTEIn a comeback to Joseph Beuys' famous declaration, "Everyone is an artist," Kippenberger had once said "Every artist is a person", and this satirical yet profound outlook is epitomised by this iconic and complex autobiographical work of 1985. Executed during the fecund zenith of the artist's creative maturity, the present work immediately sets Kippenberger's contradictory and multivalent nature into play. As the title of the painting tells us, the picture here conveys the wrong logo of 'The Lord Jim Lodge' - a secret society of which Kippenberger was a member along with a number of fellow German contemporary artists. Although its beginnings are unclear, an anecdotal story of the Lodge's formation involves a cardboard box being passed around Berlin's Paris Bar late one night, and anyone who deposited a small fee became a lifetime member. Kippenberger, who was the self-appointed curator of the Paris Bar's now-renowned art collection, uses the Lodge's logo in various guises throughout much of his work of the 1980s. The logo consists of a hammer smashing into a rayed sun, a spider's web and a pair of breasts over the acronym N.H.M, which stands for the lodge's motto: 'Niemand Hilft Niemand' or Nobody Helps Nobody'.Although the Lodge's striking hammer was essentially adopted by Kippenberger as his own motif, the entire composition is rife with symbolism and allusion. The layered impenetrability of the background suggests a wooden door or floor as locked and steadfast as the society. The day-glow spider's web weaving its way through the rays of the centrally positioned sun is another recurring motif of Kippenberger's work. He had read somewhere that spiders spin their web differently under the influence of various drugs and the hallucinatory use of colour here reflects this. Kippenberger also had a profound knowledge of art history and he would have been familiar with the Modernist 'Spiderman Atelier' and the role of drug names in their paintings. The web here also functions as a map of accumulated information, alluded to by the various tourist labels scattered around the periphery of the canvas. For Kippenberger, knowledge and experience was the prerequisite condition to finding new ways of extending art history in valid ways. Expressing his tongue in cheek love for the banal, low brow and bad-taste alongside that of two of Germany's two most prominent artists of the 20th century, 'Polke + Baselitz', Kippenberger provides a sublime realisation of his quest to disprove and ridicule the romantic notion of the artist. By likening Polke and Baselitz, and by extension himself, to the pornographer Larry Flint, Schnapps, and the Underground system, Kippenberger strips away art's cultured veneer to expose its often absurd dysfunctionality.
