Martin Kippenberger (1953-1997), Drawing, 'Faule Sau', 1991

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Ballpoint-Pen, colored crayon and silver point on (hotel letter) paper Martin Kippenberger (1953-1997) - Painter, sculptor, photographer and performance artist Germany, 1991 Signed with monogram and dated with pen lower right "M. K. 91" Overall dimensions: 29.5 x 20.7 cm Very good condition Provenance: German private collection Literature: Catalogue of the Hotel-drawings, 'Martin Kippenberger, "Hotel Hotel"', Köln 1993, p. Kippenberger's 'hotel drawings' deserve a special mention within the artist's oeuvre. In 2013, a selection of them was exhibited as part of the Kippenberger retrospective at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin; the auction record of these works on paper amounts to almost 42,000 Euros The present drawing was executed on letter paper, which was available at the Hotel Grand Lundia in 1991. It depicts an abstract formation of lines and circles, crossed by the red colored words "Faule Sau" (= "Lazy Slob") on top. The work reflects the artist's constant drive to express his thoughts and artistic ideas at all times and possible locations. Martin Kippenberger spent a lot of time travelling around the world. Since canvases and painting utensils were not necessarily always at hand, the artist needed a useful and easily available equivalent, which he found in the letter paper of his places of residence. This explains why Kippenberger's 'hotel drawings' are rated as one of his most important sources of inspiration. The work is in very good condition with only minimal traces of use. It is slightly kinked at the edges. The artist has signed and dated his work lower right "M.K. 91". It measures 29.5 x 20.7 cm. Martin Kippenberger (1953-1997) The German artist Martin Kippenberger was quite a provocative public personality and was renowned for his extreme positions in different styles and media. Between 1971 and 1976, he studied at the Academy of Arts in Hamburg, where he encountered a great variety of artists such as Sigmar Polke (1941-2010). In 1978, Kippenberger moved to Berlin and founded the exhibition space "Kippenbergers Büro" in cooperation with the German gallerist Gisela Capitain. Kippenberger's works were presented at numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale in 1988 and the documenta X in Kassel. Examples of his works are located at the K21 Kunstsammlung NRW in Dusseldorf, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne and the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. Due to the legal obligation for the resale royalty in the art market the following applies: As a result of its membership in the AV Kunst, Auctionata charges additionally to the hammer price the contribution to the AV Kunst of currently 2.1% of the revenues from the sale of fine arts and photographs pro rata towards the buyer. More information about royalty right in our T&C.

Description: Assemblage with cardboard, tape, bicycle seat and the exhibition catalog; in Plexiglas boxGermany, 1989Martin Kippenberger (1953-1997) – German painter, installation and performance artist, sculptor and photographerSigned and dated ‘Kippenberger 89‘ on a cardboard boxOne of 14 unique examples of this work produced by the artist for the deluxe edition of the exhibition catalogue for ‘Das Medium der Fotografie ist berechtigt Denkanstöße zu geben’ , Sammlung F.C. Gundlach, Kunstverein Hamburg 1989Dimensions of the box: 42 x 32 x 35 cmVery good conditionA typical assemblage of the artist with enigmatic content, as indicated in the title of work. Similar objects have been sold for around €24,000 in the auction marketThe assemblage is a recurring technique in the work of Martin Kippenberger (1953-1997), who was looking for a permanent extension of artistic media. In so doing, the artist raised repeatedly the question of originality and authenticity of an artwork, referring to methods of appropriation art, collaboration and delegation. Kippenberger's works are complex and often deliberately impenetrable. They indicate, however, numerous references to popular culture, politics, history, literature and the artist’s autobiography.Object is regular taxed. 19% VAT is added to the purchase price for deliveries within the EU.Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 18,000 EuroCondition:The work is in a very good condition with only minor scratches to the object box. The dimensions are 42 x 32 x 35 cm.Martin Kippenberger (1953-1997)Martin Kippenberger’s work is characterized by his provocative personality and his extreme positions in diverse styles and media. Kippenberger was named the enfant terrible of his generation. He graduated from The University of Fine Arts of Hamburg, where he was inspired amongst others by Sigmar Polke. Kippenberger’s refusal to adapt to a specific style resulted in an extremely prolific and diverse work, which includes sculptures, paintings, works on paper, photographs, installations and prints. Kippenberger’s art work was honored already during his lifetime with exhibitions in international museums. Today, many of his works are on display in important museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Tate Gallery in London.
