DAVID HAMMONS (1943 - ) & BRUCE TALAMON (ND - ) Untitled (Max Roach Album Art).

Lot 50: DAVID HAMMONS (1943 - ) & BRUCE TALAMON (ND - ) Untitled (Max Roach Album Art).

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: DAVID HAMMONS (1943 - ) & BRUCE TALAMON (ND - ) Untitled (Max Roach Album Art). Group of 4 color screenprints, one printed on corrugated cardboard, three printed on wove paper, 1977. Each 13x11 inches, full margins. Each print (except the blue one), is inscribed with "Photo/Silkscreen, Bruce Talamon/David Hammons" and their NYC telephone numbers in ink by Talamon on the verso. Provenance: the estate of Max Roach, New York, with a signed and dated "4/6/77" letter written from Bruce Talamon, and the original cardboard box, sent to "Mr. Max Roach" at his Amherst, MA address. Bruce Talamon gives Roach David Hammons's Just Above Midtown Gallery West 57th Street address and phone number as contact as "the other half of this collaboration is in New York now." Talamon describes how "we are both excited about these pictures, and would like you to consider them or at least the concept for any graphic work you might need on albums." It is not known if any project by Max Roach with this artwork was ever realized. Roach's music labels employed a number of artists to design his album covers. Additionally, he has been the subject of many artists' portraits, from William Gottlieb's photographs of him playing jazz in clubs in the late 1940s to Jean-Michel Basquiat's painting, Max Roach, 1984. David Hammons and Bruce Talamon are closely associated with the vibrant Los Angeles and New York art scenes in the late 1970s. Almost every David Hammons installation or event at the time was photographed by his friend Talamon. The exhibition catalogue Now Dig This: Art & Black Los Angeles 1960-1980 at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, illustrates several of Talamon's photographs of Hammons creating body prints in the Just Above Midtown Gallery.

DAVID HAMMONS (1943 - ) Untitled.

Lot 89: DAVID HAMMONS (1943 - ) Untitled.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: DAVID HAMMONS (1943 - ) Untitled. Enamel on masonite, circa 1969. 1016x762 mm; 40x30 inches. Signed in oil, lower right. Provenance: Cory Gallery, San Francisco (with the label on the verso), private New York collection; thence by descent to the current owner. An extraordinary painting by this important contemporary artist, David Hammons's untitled abstraction presents a seldom-seen side of his early work. Hammons creates a beautiful and organic composition in a swirling mixture of enamel paint. Within the framework of minimal abstraction, the artist shows an early experimental use of material. This painting dates from the first years of his studies at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles (1968 - 1972) before he began his more celebrated body art prints. Another Hammons enamel on masonite painting dated 1969 sold at Sotheby's on May 16, 2007; we have not located any other examples of his late '60s abstract painting.

DAVID HAMMONS (1943 - ) Untitled (Body Print).

Lot 128: DAVID HAMMONS (1943 - ) Untitled (Body Print).

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: DAVID HAMMONS (1943 - ) Untitled (Body Print). Pigment, ink and colored pencils on wove paper, 1977. 675x495 mm; 26 5/8x19 5/8 inches. Signed and dated in pencil, lower right. Provenance: the artist; Susan Loftin, Atlanta, 1977; private collection, 1986. David Hammons created this work while working at the Neighborhood Arts Center in Atlanta. Hammons was friends with fellow Californian artist John Riddle, who was then director of the center. Susan Loftin was also an artist in residence at the center in 1977. A wonderful example of this contemporary artist's body art on paper, this image not only contains an impression of the artist's face, but includes a large amount of hand coloring with color pencils and graphite. Hammons had an early interest in the figure--taking a drawing class with Charles White while at the Otis Art Institute from 1966-68. In an interview with Joseph A. Young for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art 1971 exhibition, Three Graphic Artists, Hammons described the process of making these body prints, which appear photographic in their graphic quality. Unlike traditional monotypes, his prints used powdered pigments that were applied to the paper after he had physically placed his margarine-coated body or clothing against the paper. While several of these works are in important private and museum collections, an exhibition at Jack Tilton Gallery in New York in November 2006 assembled 30 of these body prints, and was critically acclaimed for re-introducing this important, early work to the public. The exploration of unique and transitory images, body art and issues of identity that Hammons began in this work has continued throughout his career.

DAVID HAMMONS (1943 - ) Moving to the Other Side.

Lot 35: DAVID HAMMONS (1943 - ) Moving to the Other Side.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: DAVID HAMMONS (1943 - ) Moving to the Other Side. Screenprint printed in shades of grey on cream wove paper, 1969. 762x890 mm; 30x35 inches. Unique proof. Signed and dated in pencil, lower right. Moving to the Other Side is a wonderful early example of this contemporary artist's important body art on paper, made in just the second year of this oeuvre. Hammons had taken an early interest in the figure - taking a drawing class under Charles White while at the Otis Art Institute from 1966-68. In an interview with Joseph A. Young for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art 1971 exhibition, Three Graphic Artists, with White and Timothy Washington, Hammons described the process of making these body prints which appear photographic in their sharp graphic quality. Unlike traditional monotypes, his prints used powdered pigments which are applied after physically placing himself against the paper with his body or clothing coated in margarine. The hard part for the artist was removing himself from the work: "When I lie down on the paper which is first placed on the floor, I have to carefully decide how to get up after I have made the impression that I want. Sometimes I lie there for perhaps three minutes or even longer just figuring out how I can get off the paper without smudging the image that I'm trying to print." Young, p. 8. Then the artist applied a fixative to secure the image to the thin layer of margarine, often, as in this work, with multiple impressions. The artist took this work one step further making a screenprint of a monotype, moving the print across the paper to create a multiple self-image. This is a technique he employed with other monotype images including Spade from 1974. While several of these works are in important private and museum collections, a recent exhibition at Jack Tilton Gallery in New York in November of 2006 assembled 30 of these body prints, and was critically acclaimed for re-introducing this important, early work to the public. The exploration of unique and transitory images, body art and issues of identity that Hammons began in this work has continued throughout his career.

Lot 75: DAVID HAMMONS (1943 - ) African-American Flag.

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: DAVID HAMMONS (1943 - ) African-American Flag. Printed fabric stapled on a painted wooden pole, circa 1990. Flag 200x280 mm; 8x11 inches; pole 458 mm; 18 inches long. Signed and dated 1997 in ink, lower right. Provenance: gift of the artist to Sara Penn, New York, owner of the gallery Knobkerry in Tribeca, where the artist exhibited in 1994. The artist made a large version of this flag, over seven feet in length, as a multiple in 1990 - one famously hangs outside the Studio Museum in Harlem, and another is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. David Hammons explained "Marcus Garvey designed the African American flag, which looked like the Italian flag except that it is red, black, and green. But it is so abstract, so pure, that the masses were frightened by it. I made my flag because I felt that they needed one like the U.S. flag but with black stars instead of white ones. But then who needs stars when we have Michael Jackson." David Hammons, No Wonder, interview by Louise Neri, Parkett, no. 31 (Winter 1992), 53.

Description: b. 1943 JOHN HENRY signed on the underside of the stone stone, hair, steel 44A by 5A by 6in. 113.7 by 14.6 by 15.2cm. Executed in 1990. John Henry, comprised of hair on stone set on a railroad tie, refers to John Henry, supposedly the strongest man to drive a hammer during the building of the Big Bend Tunnel through the West Virginia mountains in the early 1870s. In elegaic sculptural terms, Hammons references the legend, in which John Henry bet the captain that he could drill steel faster than the newly invented steam drill. John Henry won the bet, but the effort killed him. A verse of the legend, passed down by song, follows: "Well there's some say he came from Texas There's some say he came from Maine Well I don't give a damn where that poor boy was from You know that he was a steel drvin' man, Lord God John Henry was a steel drivin' man." Provenance Jack Tilton Gallery, New York Acquired by the present owner from the above.

Description: DAVID HAMMONS (1943 - ) Untitled. Photolithograph, 1992. 630x440 mm; 24 3/4x17 1/4 inches, full margins. Signed, dated and numbered 34/45 in pencil, lower right. Published by Editions Schellmann, München, for Documenta IX. A very good impression. Born in Springfield, Illinois, David Hammons is a visual and conceptual artist who uses assemblage, sculpture and installation to address issues of African-American identity and culture. He studied at the Chouinard Art Institute and Otis Art Institute, Los Angeles, and at the Parsons School of Design, New York. Hammons makes many of his artworks from found objects and debris to confront cultural stereotypes and racial issues; examples include pyramids of human hair collected from the floors of Harlem barbershops, snowballs that he sells on the sidewalk and drawings made from Harlem dirt bounced off a basketball onto paper. His work is often installed on city streets and in vacant lots rather than in art galleries. Hammons is perhaps best known for the African American flag that hangs outside the Studio Museum in Harlem. His work has been exhibited internationally and is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Musuem of American Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
