Description: B. 1954ACCORDANCEmeasurements186.7 by 148.3cm.alternate measurements73 1/2 by 58 3/8 in.signed and dated 2006ink, silver leaf, mica, pencil and glitter on Nepal paperExecuted in 2006.PROVENANCEDonated by the artist, courtesy of PaceWildenstein, New YorkNOTEKiki Smith's art ranges over a diverse array of creative tools, shifting from the literal to the conceptual, the political to the personal, the scientific to the spiritual. Known as one of the most significant sculptors of her generation, she makes work of and about the body in a wide range of media such as bronze, ceramic, wax and paper.Smith's piece Accordance reflects her concern with the body as the arena of psychological, mystical and metaphysical experiences. Accordance is a life size drawing, depicting the figure of the artist herself, seemingly floating above of, what looks like a fragment of another drawing. At first the work resembles the romantic representation of women in the mid 19th century found in the paintings of Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) and Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882). The elements of this drawing, the body posture and the garment, depict the female figure as sensual. The face appears serious and the model stares the viewer directly in the eye; a representation of someone in total control of herself. Kiki Smith uses symbolism in order to construct a spiritual image of the female. The body is covered with soft grey and white marks, which resemble the natural shapes of stars or snowflakes, both favourite symbols in Smith's iconography. The four white marks seem to be references to the body's energy points (chakras) which in some belief systems are considered essential for an inner balance and good health. The moth on the chest is an ancient symbol of fragility and sensuality, because of its natural attraction to light. It is also a symbol of transformation, metamorphosis and rejuvenation. Here, the insect is not parasitic to the human body; on the contrary it is in harmony and symbiosis with it. All the symbols used by the artist bestow the female body with natural power and attributes which bring it an immediate connection with a cosmological reality. This beautiful work is strengthened by the title, Accordance, which gives it a perfect sense of reconciliation, balance and harmony.Born in Nuremberg, Germany in 1954, Kiki Smith grew up in New Jersey and has lived in New York since 1976. She studied at Hartford Art School CT from 1974-76. Her work received significant attention in the 1990s and by the time she exhibited at the Whitechapel in 1995, she was already one of the most acclaimed female artists of that era. A major survey of her work toured American museums throughout 2006 culminating with the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. "I am making work that's about the body; I'm playing with the indestructibility of life, where life is this ferocious force that keeps propelling us. At the same time...you can just pierce it and it dies. I'm always playing between these two extremes.' (cited in: Wendy Weitman Prints, Books and Things, New York 2003, p.55)Fascinated by the body as the stage for all psychological, ideological, spiritual and aesthetic experiences, she continues to produce works with both traditional and new techniques. Smith's work functions within a poetic territory and a bare reality, succeeding to construct an image of the world that unites the fragmented experiences of human life. NY

Description: Untitled (Ovum and Sperm) signed and dated 'Kiki Smith 1992' (on the underside of ovum) cast aluminum ovum with brown and gold patina with ten cast bronze sperm ovum: 12 x 131/4 in. (30.5 x 33.6 cm.), each sperm: variable size Executed in 1992 PROVENANCE Art Foundry, Inc., Santa Fe. Acquired from the above by the present owner, 1993. EXHIBITION Santa Fe, Laura Carpenter Fine Art, Kiki Smith, September-October 1994. NOTES In this work, made in 1992, Smith continued her exploration of the human body in its most intimate organs, the reproductive ones. At the beginning of the 90's, the contemporary body was still viewed as a political battleground as the struggle for reproductive rights continued to be waged. This struggle is perceptible in the materials'choice; contrary to her works in paper, metals are bigger challenge to cast "because they are dead" and then, she had to put life into them. The use of bronze, a permanent and noble material, to represent the sperms suggests that she wanted to challenge our representation of the male body as a tool to assert the topics of gender and identity. With the same view, the ovum, oversized, is cast in much lighter material, aluminum responding to the usual female body imagery. The ovum's emptiness seems to depict the acute Smith's awareness of the various fractions fighting for control of the female body and the conflicting and self-serving agenda that may impact in our most private decisions.
