Description: WALTER LAUNT PALMER American (1854-1932) Winter Stream oil on canvas, signed lower left. 28 x 28 Provenance: The artist; Descended in the family to the present owner, Albany, New York. Other Notes: Walter Launt Palmer was born in Albany, New York, in 1854. He was the son of renowned sculptor Erastus Dow Palmer, who was a close friend of Frederic Edwin Church, who became Palmer's teacher in 1870. Palmer studied in Europe with Carolus-Duran between 1873 and 1876. Upon his return from Europe, he and Frederic Church rented a studio in New York City. Palmer received the Second Halgarten Prize of the National Academy 1887, a gold medal from the Philadelphia Art Club in 1894 and a gold medal from the Boston Art Club in 1895 and the. Palmer's use of color to exemplify reflections in snow and water is what he has become famous for. His use of blue and pink in the shadows of the snow makes "Winter Stream" a fine example of the artists work.

Description: Walter Launt Palmer (American, 1854-1932) "Late Afternoon". Oil on canvas, signed lower right, in original frame. Purchase receipt from Pascal M. Gatterdam Art Gallery, New York accompanies the lot. This painting has been in the same family and is completely fresh to the market. This is among the latest and is perhaps the last painting by the artist, as he died three weeks after the painting's purchase. The original envelope from the gallery includes a cover letter, receipt and black and white photodocument for the painting. The verso of the photograph is inscribed by Palmer, addressed to the purchaser thanking him for purchasing the painting. The last line of the inscription states "I can only hope you may get as much pleasure from owning this picture as I did in painting it!", dated 1932. Canvas apprx 25in x 30in, overall with frame apprx 33in x 38in.
