Description: Stanhope Forbes RA (1857-1947) Breton Market, June Oil on board, 22 x 27cm (8¾ x 10½'') Signed Stanhope Forbes started his studies at Dulwich College of Art and The Royal Academy Schools and then travelled to Paris in 1880 where he studied under Bonnat at his atelier in Clichy. In 1881 Forbes visited Brittany and painted A Street in Brittany, which met with considerable success when exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1882. Greatly encouraged Forbes returned to Brittany staying at Quimperlé. Although he visited Pont-Aven and met many fellow artists there he preferred the quieter, less crowded location of Quimperlé where this work is possibly painted. In 1884 he exhibited two further market scenes of Quimperlé which he had painted in 1883 one of which, Fair Measures: a shop in Quimperlé, was included in our Summer loan show at the Ava Gallery ''The French Connection'' August 2010 Cat. No. 2 while Preparations for the Market is now in the Dunedin Art Gallery, New Zealand and was illustrated in 'Victorian Social Conscience', an exhibition held in New South Wales in 1976.

Forbes, Stanhope Alexander (British, 1857-1947) Portrait of an English Lady 1874 Oil Painting

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Forbes, Stanhope Alexander (British, 1857-1947) Portrait of a Lady Wearing a Lace Shawl. Oil on canvas painting. Signed and dated lower left S. A. Forbes 1874. In good condition, has old wax reline and has been restored. Painting measures 44 inches x 31 inches. Framed in an old 2" frame liner. From Askart: The figurative and rural landscape artist Stanhope Forbes, later an important member of the influential Newlyn school of landscape painting, was born in Dublin to an English father and French mother. An uncle, the art-collector James Staats Forbes, had a well known collection of contemporary paintings. Stanhope studied fine art painting at Dulwich College, the Lambeth School of Art, then briefly at the Royal Academy Schools. In London he made friends with Henry La Thangue, with whom he painted later in Brittany. After London, Forbes studied figurative drawing and painting in Paris under Leon Bonnat at his art studio in Clichy. In 1881, he went to St. Malo in Brittany to practice Impressionist-style landscape painting. Here, he executed A Street in Brittany, which met with considerable success when it was shown at the Royal Academy in 1882. It was purchased by the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, which gave Forbes enormous encouragement in his plein-air painting career. He returned to Brittany in 1883, staying at Quimperl? and Pont-Aven. Without doubt he would have met several other Irish artists who were painting there at the time, such as: Nathaniel Hill, Walter Osborne, Norman Garstin, and Joseph Malachy Kavanagh. At the Royal Hibernian Academy the following year, he exhibited Breton Children in an Orchard - Quimperle, a picture with obvious similarities to Walter Osborne's Apple Gathering, Quimperl?, Brittany, shown at the same exhibition. His Breton paintings, such as "Preparations for the Market, Quimperl? and Fair Measures: a Shop in Quimperle, were also successfully shown at the Royal Academy. In 1884, at the age of 27, he moved to Newlyn in Cornwall where he settled for the rest of his life. He became one of the central figures of the Newlyn School, which, because of his many successes at the Royal Academy, soon became firmly established. Here he met fellow painter Elizabeth Adela Armstrong (1859-1912) whom he later married. Of his fine art, Norman Garstin wrote: "[Forbes] sees with extraordinary clearness and simplicity, and renders with extraordinary clearness what he sees". In 1886 Stanhope Forbes became a founding member of the New English Art Club. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1910 and continued painting with distinction for the rest of his life.

Provenance: Acquired from Forbes' studio by Thomas Irving who worked for the Penzance firm of auctioneers who cleared works from the studio. Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: •STANHOPE ALEXANDER FORBES RA (1857-1947) A study of a woman seated on a harbour wall, oil on canvas, 39.5" x 29.25". See illustration. Provenance: Acquired in the 1980's in Causwayhead, Penzance. This composition bears a striking resemblance to a fully signed watercolour study by Forbes, featuring what appears to be the same model in the same location. The sitter appears to be Annie Blewett, who was also the subject of one of Forbes's most celebrated works 'The Harbour Window' which was painted in the upstairs sitting room of the Ship Inn in Mousehole, Cornwall, which Blewett lived next door to. Given the curvature of the harbour wall and the headland beyond, it is a fair assumption that this work was also undertaken in Mousehole.
