CHARLES LOUIS LUCIEN MULLER (1815-1892) 'La dame au kimono' Canv

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: CHARLES LOUIS LUCIEN MULLER (1815-1892) 'La dame au kimono' Canvas. Signed 'C.L.Muller'. Original canvas. Stamp on the reverse 'Delforge Carpentier, Rue Maline 6 Paris'. Provenance: bought from Pol De Mont by architect Jules Birmant, Ninove, in 1915. In the same collection since. 91 x 74.5 Dutch Text: CHARLES LOUIS LUCIEN MULLER (1815-1892) 'La dame au kimono' Doek. Getekend 'C.L.Muller'. Origineel doek. Stempel op verso 'Delforge Carpentier, Rue Maline 6 Paris'. Herkomst: gekocht van Pol De Mont door architect Jules Birmant, Ninove, in 1915. Sindsdien in dezelfde verzameling.

Description: AFTER CHARLES LOUIS LUCIEN MULLER (1815-1892) (IN COLLABORATION WITH ALFRED DE RICHEMONT (1857-1911), AMERICANCHARLOTTE CORDAY IN PRISONOil on “W. Schaus Artist Colourmen, New York” stamped American canvas; bears signature ”C.L. Muller” and inscribed with unknown indistinct script letters or numerals lower right.Together with a hardcover book: “The French Revolution” by Thomas Carlyle, illustrating the original in the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., Plate VIII42.5" x 34" — 108 x 86.4 cm.Provenance:Family Collection since circa the 1950’s;Ex. Coll. of the present Private Collection’s grandfather, Mati Vaher until 1982;By descentLiterature:The original was published as a colour postcard souvenir of the Corcoran Gallery of Art by the Detroit Publishing Co. “Phostint”Note:The original oil on canvas by C.L.L. Muller, is recorded to have been painted as a collaborative work with contemporary French artist, Alfred De Richemont, on October 9, 1889. Measuring 41” x 33” (almost the same size as this lot) the original was once held in the collection of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. According to a letter from the Corcoran Gallery of Art, dated October 12, 1982, accompanying this lot, the painting was deaccessioned in 1979 and sold at Sotheby Parke Bernet, New York on May 3, 1979, lot 60. The gallery noted the possibility that Muller may have executed more than one painting of this subject. Known to history as Charlotte Corday, Marie-Anne Charlotte de Corday d'Armont was a figure of the French Revolution. In 1793, she was executed under the guillotine for the assassination of Jean-Paul Marat, the Jacobian leader.   It is reported, that William M'Leod, (William McLeod (1811-1892), the American curator of the Corcoran Gallery, studied art in his earlier years and attained considerable proficiency in it. Since he had charge of the Corcoran Gallery, he made copies of several of the most important pictures, some of which are so much like the originals as to deceive connoisseurs. McLeod’s rule of making copies stated no copy to be larger than 2/3’s of the size of the original picture. The 'Charlotte Corday,' here shown, is nearly the same size as the original.Estimate: $2,000—3,000

This gouache was the result of a competition between Brentano and the artist to see if the former could write a novel so complex that the latter would be unable to produce an illustraion for it. Schinkel won and the gouache was intended for the cover of the book, which was published by Guido Gorre, Cottaschen Verlag, Stuttgart and Tubingen 1846-47, though eventually without the illustration. The drawing is dedicated on a separate sheet to Dr V.C. Muller by Clemens Brentano and his brother. Provenance: Dr V.C.
