Condition Report: Note condition: no in-painting, rips or tears. Areas of craquelure in central area approx. 6 x 2 inch. The senior paintings conservator, Andrea Chevalier at the Cleveland Intermuseum Conservation Association proposes that the areas previously thought to be mold are in fact the artists re-worked areas of the painting. It is believed that it is the application of paint over previously varnished areas that has created passages of matte paint and a chalky distortion of color as seen in the figure of Moses Soyer (lower right corner). We feel that this was done by the artist John Koch because the varnish/matte effect is consistent throughout the painting and not an isolated section. The painting has a uniform surface under black light and on verso, the canvas is in pristine condition with no mold, markings or tears. Please contact Andrea Chevalier for further assistance: Intermuseum Conservation Association 2915 Detroit Avenue Cleveland, OH 44113 Phone: 216.658.8700
