Description: Dialogue, #5 (One hand clapping) installation--stuffed animal, radio and blanket 16 x 63 x 40in. (41 x 162 x 103cm.) Executed in 1991. This work is to be sold with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. PROVENANCE Galerie Jablonka, Cologne EXHIBITION New York, Whitney Museum of American Art; Los Angeles, Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and Munich, Haus der Kunst, Mike Kelley: Catholic Tastes, November 1993--April 1995, p. 204 (illustrated). Villa Merkel, Galerie der Stadt Esslingen, Fort! Da! Cooperations!, February-June 1997. NOTES Mike Kelley's work combines found objects which have complex emotional histories such as children's toys with cassette recordings that evoke his own work as a musician and performer. Kelley's upbringing as a Catholic and his distrust of the repressive structures of the Church inform his work. The blankets and toys are both formal components and a record of the unappeasable emotional debt owed to the adults by the children who had been given them. "Unlike many of his peers, Kelley chose not to appropriate media imagery but instead registered the devastating effects, the shame and degradation, wreaked on the image and object consumer. Kelley doesn't simply depict the pathetic--his works are so limply anemic, so plainly suffering from a case of rejectionitis, that you can almost feel sorry for them as art objects. Despite evidence of the artist's secondary personas, there's no coyness or sense of psychological remove. In a society fueled by pictures of success, these images of failure generate the anxiety that surrounds the taboo." (R. Rugoff, Mike Kelley Catholic Tastes, exh. cat., Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, 1993, p. 171) Mike Kelley defined these pieces: "In my work, the system and the anti-system aren't about architecture versus the material contained by it, they're more about social systems... The placement on the floor makes you think of certain historic formal discussions. Yet the materials themselves deny that discussion because the materials relate to hearth and home, and developmental kinds of issues." (Mike Kelley interviewed by John Miller in Mike Kelley, Los Angeles, 1992, p. 44).

Cat., New York, Whitney Museum of American Art, Mike Kelley, Catholic Tastes, 1993, p. 232, illustrated (Rosamund Felsen Gallery installation) NOTE"The complete title is: Empathy Displacement: Humanoid Morphology (2nd and 3rd Remove). 2nd and 3rd Remove refers to the second and third removal from the platonic archetype of the human. The first removed would be your body. The second removed would be the doll. The third removed would be the image of the doll. So we're getting at some notion of the human only through a second and third remove, and even then there's all these levels of displacement. You realize that the whole function of empathy is displacement. That's what I was trying to do in these pieces." (Mike Kelley in Artpress, Mike Kelley, New York, 1992, p. 51)

PROVENANCE Metro Pictures, New York Janet de Botton, London LITERATURE J. Miller, "Art Press, Los Angeles", Flash Art (International Edition), Milan 1992, pp.34-35. J. C. Welchman, I. Graw and A. Vidler, Mike Kelley, London 1999, p.68 (illustrated in color). U. Grosenick and B. Riemschneider, Art at the Turn of the Millenium, Cologne 1999, p.271 (illustrated in color). EXHIBITION New York, Metro Pictures, Mike Kelley, May 1990. London, Serpentine Gallery, Objects for the Ideal Home, November-October 1991. NOTES Mike Kelley has often found inspiration in the soiled remnants of childhood left forgotten in the American suburban basement. Matted and tattered, chewed up and cried upon, Kelley's stuffed animal and blanket installations are powerful critiques of culture, both aesthetically and psychologically. From a visual and formal standpoint, Kelley presents the viewer with soiled toys as unexpected ready-mades, which despite their inherent limitations at formal poetry, can be seen as discreet objects. Psychologically, they represent the time in childhood when "transitional" objects are used to move away from dependency and on to security and independence. Loaded with "love hours" and "guilt hours" the stuffed animals never fully transcend their original context, therefore leaving the artist, as the artist desires, with vague feelings of one's own childhood. Arena #6 (Peaceable Kingdom) comes from a masterful body of work where Kelley hones his visual language and conceptual thinking. In his words: "My shift of interest to the individual craft item led me away from my earlier accumulation works into the Arenas series consisting of stuffed animals in arrangements on blankets laid on the floor. In these works I played the inclination to project into the figures, to construct an inner narrative around them, against the viewer's awareness of his or her physical presence. This self-consciousness was produced by using extremely worn and soiled craft materials. The viewer's immediate tendency to be sucked into a narrativizing situation is repelled when they get close enough to sense the unpleasant tactile qualities of the craft materials. Fear of becoming soiled counters the urge to idealize." (M. Kelley, "In the Image of Man", in Mike Kelley 1985-1996, Museu d'art Contemporain de Barcelona, p.68) Arena #6 (Peaceable Kingdom) is particularly strong for it's psychological charge and the formal sense that the animals, lovingly huddled together convey. The blanket, like a vast landscape enveloping the herd gives the scene a sense of safety, even for the little unicorn, separated from the flock.
