Description: Picking blossom signed 'E A FORBES' (lower left) oil on panel 133/4 x 101/4 in. (34.9 x 26 cm.) NOTES Elizabeth Forbes was unique among the Newlyn artists in her ability to evoke a fantasy world out of the Cornish landscape, and in depicting the magical qualities of childhood. Stanhope Forbes, her husband, was a rigid adherent to social realism, but he appreciated her ability, describing her work in oil and watercolour as 'charming and beautiful paintings which combine such lovely imaginative qualities with almost unrivalled technical skill and artistic feeling' (see C. Fox, Stanhope Forbes and the Newlyn School, London, 1993, p. 49).

Description: The Bluebell Wood signed 'EAS FORBES' (lower left) oil on panel 10 x 14 in. (26 x 35.5 cm.) NOTES In the introduction to her 1904 exhibition at the Leicester Galleries, London, Model Children and Other People, the artist wrote about the child models she used in Newlyn: 'Humourous, quaint and pathetic are the little irresponsible folk, the volunteer models of the village and countryside. When the painter, filled with energy and anticipation, emerges at the day's beginning, they are already watching afar off. They gather in bands. If permitted to carry the painting kit, it becomes a triumphal procession. Desperate their ambition to be 'put in the picture'... Dear little people! to the painter who goes back year by year, to the same hunting grounds, the memory of them glorified and tender... And one marks the flight of the years with their changing. The yellow-haired baby of one summer is the sturdy brown-legged urchin of the next. Still a little longer, and the tiny schoolgirl with pinafore and satchel is found again in the slim young matron, mothering a yellow-haired baby in her turn. The children change but always the same wind ruffles the dry grass on the hill-side, and drives the strong blue waves in to break on the shore'. (see Mrs. Lionel Birch, Stanhope Forbes and Elizabeth Stanhope Forbes, London, 1906, p.81).
