Description: Black chalk, with grey wash and heightened with white, on grey and blue coloured paper, respectively Both bear signature B. West on verso, with further later attribution to West on mount Each c.22.5 x 36 cm. (8 3/4 x 14 1/4 in), and 21.5 x 31.5 cm. (8 1/2 x 12 1/4 in), (2) The drawing depicting the Coronation of Marie de' Medici in St. Denis is a reverse copy after Rubens' painting executed between 1622 to 1624, part of the Marie de' Medici Cycle, now in the Louvre, Paris. Von Effra and Staley note the influence of Rubens' Coronation of Marie de' Medici in St. Denis on Benjamin West and his execution of The Order of the Institution of the Garter , but we have been unable link the works any further.
