Benjamin West American/British, 1738-1820 Allegory

Estimate: $8,000 - $12,000

Description: Benjamin West American/British, 1738-1820 Allegory Brown ink, wash, gouache and graphite pencil on paper 13 1/2 x 18 3/8 inches Patrick Noon, Senior Curator of Paintings and Elizabeth MacMillan Chair of the Department of Paintings at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, has observed that the present work, "... is an allegory honoring some naval hero. With West, Nelson comes first to mind since he painted the subject of Nelson's death as well as several apotheosis compositions. However, the bust of the figure being honored does not resemble Nelson and seems to represent an older man, perhaps Alexander Hood?" We extend our gratitude to Mr. Noon for his very kind assistance in cataloguing this lot. C
