Paint has played an important role at various stages in the development of Shapiro's figurative genre, originating with one of his earliest figures, Untitled (JS167A), 1976-1977, which was exhibited at the 1977 Whitney Biennial. A symphony of right angles and strident movement, this running figure is painted in vivid bands of red and black - colors that are as much an homage to Constructivism as the geometry of its form. In an interview with his wife and fellow artist, Ellen Phelan, Shapiro discussed the specific role of paint in this work and othe

Description: Joel Shapiro b. 1941 Untitled (JS 90) signed on the inside bronze 5 by 6 1/8 by 5in. 12.7 by 15.6 by 12.7cm. Executed in 1973-74, this work is number three from an edition of three. Provenance Joe Zucker, New York Daniel Weinberg Gallery, Los Angeles Vivian Horan Gallery, New York Acquired by the present owner from the above in 1990 Exhibited New York, Paula Cooper Gallery, Joel Shapiro, February-March 1974 (the iron version, JS78) New York, Whitney Museum of American Art, Architectural Analyses, September-October 1978 Literature Hendel Teicher, Joel Shapiro: Sculpture and Drawings, New York, 1998, pp. 18 and 57, nos. 3 and 57, illustrated twice (the iron version, JS78) In the early progress toward his individual aesthetic, Shapiro experimented with methods and materials, like many Process Artists of the early 1970s. However, beginning in 1973, Shapiro concentrated on metal casting, creating small forms that are a fusion of abstraction and imagery. From that moment on, Shapiro's art remained unequivocally object-oriented, within an increasingly vigorous geometric purity. Shapiro's earliest recognizable forms were a group of four objects (a coffin, bridge, bird and boat) in balsawood and bronze, exhibited in a 1973 group show at the Paula Cooper Gallery. Shapiro's return to hand-made or tool-made methods acknowledged the traditions of sculpture, while the placement of these diminutive objects on the floor signaled a radical departure toward dislocation. For his seminal one-man exhibition at the Paula Cooper Gallery in 1974, Shapiro dramatized space further by casting five iron objects - including a house, chair and couch-like form - in miniature scale, positioned on the floors and walls of the expansive gallery. Through various permutations, these signatory forms provided the initial impetus for an ongoing body of abstract work. Shapiro's deceptively small objects have a subtle power derived from the tension created by their apposite qualities. Despite its size, th

Description: JOEL SHAPIRO (b. 1941) UNTITLED bronze 36 x 56.5 x 40in. (91.4 x 143 5 x 101.6cm) executed in 1985 this work is from an edition of three E100000-150000 PROVENANCE Paula Cooper Gallery, NEW YORK A new sense of excitement is discernable in this phase of his work [of the 1980s] and it is manifested in the many inventive configurations that revel in their ambiguity. Shapiro is, in fact, driven by the possibility of producing alternative readings - "moments when it appears that a figure is a figure, and other moments when it looks like a bunch of wood stuck together - moments when it simultaneously configures and disfigures." His figures, like most of his sculptures, start with wood...Shapiro's initial configurations led him to explore changes in material, size and scale, and shape...Shapiro stresses the extent to which form and memory combine in his art: "My work has to do with memory of experience. It is an attempt to locate experience in form." For him, a form such as the figure is essentially a locus of remembered emotion, a repository in which past and present feelings are recorded. For this reason the figure remains, like memory, an abstraction, impossible to specify. As Shapiro puts it, "The figure is the source of abstraction." H. Teicher, JOEL SHAPIRO: SCULPTURE AND DRAWINGS, NEW YORK, 1998, pp.

Typical of Shapiro's uncanny ability to convey the human body using the simplest of means, its two masses appear to be crouching figures. As they fold into themselves with seemingly athletic precision, they remain joined by the suggestion of surrounding space, held in a tense balance of frozen movement. Shapiro's classical approach to sculpture shares the vitality as Henry Moore's multi-part compositions which places equal emphasis on solid forms and spatial voids. They further address the coming together and breaking apart of forms - a chief concern of Shapiro's. Shapiro uses simple abstract forms to create sculptures such as the present work, which is "figurative without having to get involved with literally describing human movement, but rather it describes one's idea of movement. It has to function in terms of one's memory of the body." (the artist quoted in Joel Shapiro,

Lot 32: Joel Shapiro (b. 1941)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Untitled incised with signature and date 'SHAPIRO 82-83' on the underside of the diving and crouching figures--incised with initials and date 'J.S. 1982' on the underside of the reclining figure three parts--bronze diving figure: 60 x 31 x 104in. (153 x 80 x 264.2cm.) crouching figure: 35 x 19 x 37in. (88.9 x 48.2 x 94cm.) reclining figure: 17 x 43 x 15in. (43.2 x 110.5 x 39.4cm.) PROVENANCE Acquired directly from the artist, in cooperation with Paula Cooper Gallery, New York. NOTES In 1980, Joel Shapiro began making bronze sculptures of human forms for which he is now best known. While these works are clearly and compellingly figurative in composition and scale, they are sharply reductivist and remain ambiguous. In a blink of an eye or a change of perspective, the "figure" becomes a tree or a blocky abstraction. The viewer is provoked to extrapolate the work's subjective meaning, and clearly Shapiro is aiming for the wide range of interpretations he elicits. Is the figure reaching or falling, resting or recoiling, figurative or abstract? In 1982-1983, Shapiro composed Untitled, his only unique life-scale three-part bronze to date. For its breadth of expression and composition, and its success as an exploration of the boundaries of minimalism and the mysteries of human experience, it marks the height of his achievement. "Diving" is the most dynamic and abstract of the works. Just three elongated elements stretch like a lunging man, or take root like a tree reaching for distant sunlight. "Crouching" is configured in a clearly human posture. The figure strains to maintain balance with elongated arms that exaggerate the effort. Alternately, the figure could be retreating to the security and privacy of the fetal position. "Reclining" relates most closely to Shapiro's earlier floor pieces. Just under human scale, it seems vulnerable, like a child curled on the floor, sleeping soundly or wounded and helpless. As Roberta Smith stated in her catalogue essay for Joel Shapiro's one-man exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1982-1983, 'His new figurative forms, his best work, infuse the precarious, obdurately abstract sculpture unities of David Smith's Cubis with Rothko's elegiac tones, making the perception of space and a vibrant, mournful emotion irrevocably synonymous' (R. Smith, Joel Shapiro, New York 1982, p. 32).

Lot 54: JOEL SHAPIRO

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: UNTITLED bronze overall: 53 by 64 by 45 1/2 in. Executed in 1980-1981, this bronze is number two in an edition of three. The artist's proof of this edition is in the Collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art. Untitled (1980-1981) dates from the period when Shapiro mastered the figurative image in his sculptures. Along with the earlier, smaller house sculptures, Shapiro's figurative work contained an iconographic element which "has helped bring sculpture back from the brink of extinction, imbuing it, in the process, with a personal yet universally legible meaning." (R. Smith, Joel Shapiro (Whitney Museum of American Art exhibition), New York, 1982, p. 12). In a series of small running men of 1976-1977, Shapiro seemed constricted by the small scale of his sculptures for the first time. Beginning in 1980, Shapiro constructed his first figures of almost life-size scale, creating works that achieved a more interdependent relationship with the space they inhabited. Most importantly, these figures become more liberated from the floor, as they balance, rest, or fall in various configurations. Untitled (1908-1981) is a sculpture balanced on one leg with one arm extended and the torso inclined forward, creating an ambiguous feeling of control and lack of control. The figure is no longer static in Shapiro's work and it acknowledges its ground as a participant in the overall composition. In an interview with Richard Marshall for the 1982 exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Shapiro further commented on Untitled (1980-1981) and its importance to his work. "The interesting aspect of this piece for me wasn't that it was large and a figure, although that interested me, but more the way it was put together. I think it is important that a convincing piece of sculpture could be put together so simply and be figurative without having to get involved with literally describing human movement, but rather it describes one's idea of movement or one's internal feeling of movement. It has to function in terms of one's memory of the body....I am more interested in how one thinks about something than in what something looks like. I am interested in what a house or figure might mean, or what it means to me. I am interested in my capacity to refer to it in terms of sculpture, but not to illustrate it or describe it." (p. 101).
