Damien Hirst, Etching, Circles in the Sand, UK, 2002

Estimated Price: $6,000 - $6,500

Description: Color etching on HahnemüleUnited Kingdom, 2002Damien Hirst (b. 1965) – British contemporary artistSigned in pencil lower right ‘Damien Hirst’Signed, titled and dated in plate ‘Damien Hirst / 30/05/02 / Circles in the Sand’From In a Spin, The Action of the World on Things Volume I (Paragon Vol. III, p. 76-87)Published by Paragon Press, LondonFull marginsPlate dimensions: 7 x 8 in. (17.5 x 20 cm.)Sheet dimensions: 35 ¾ x 27 ¾ in. (91.5 x 71.8 cm.)Very good condition Estimate $6,000-$6,500Mesmerizingly intricate, this etching by British artist Damien Hirst features overlapping concentric circles of varying colors. For this series of prints, Hirst attached copper plates to a spin machine and drew on them as they spun with needles, screwdrivers and other sharp tools. This performance-like ritual lasted for several days and the result is a dizzying aesthetic experience. The prints’ format and the title of the portfolio – “In a Spin, The Action of the World on Things, Volume I” were inspired by long-exposure photograph the artist had taken of the night sky. Executed in 2002, this color etching is signed in pencil and signed, titled and dated in the plate. Published by Paragon Press, London, the work has full margins and measures 35 ¾ x 27 ¾ inches. Remains verso from previous mounting. Otherwise in good condition with no evidence of tears, toning, stains or repairs. Damien Hirst (British, b. 1965)Born in Bristol, Damien Hirst first came to public attention in 1988 when he conceived and curated “Freeze,” an exhibition of his work and that of his fellow students at Goldsmiths College, London. In the years that have followed that show, Hirst has become one of the most prominent artists of his generation. Many of his works are widely recognized, from the shark suspended in formaldehyde to his spot, spin and butterfly paintings, through to later works such as the diamond skull. The artist was included in the 1992 Young British Artists exhibition at Saatchi Gallery, London and in 1995 won the Turner Prize. Solo exhibitions of Hirst’s work have been held at Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Naples (2004), Astrup Fearnley Museet fur Moderne Kunst, Oslo (2005), Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (2008), Galerie Rudolfinum, Prague (2009), The Wallace Collection, London (2009–10), the Oceanographic Museum, Monaco (2010), the Museo di Palazzo Vecchio, Florence (2010) and Tate Modern, London (2012). The artist lives and works in Devon and London, U.K. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
