Description: Elijah Pierce (1892-1984) horse and rider (paul revere), circa 1970s The carved and painted wood figure modeled as a man in a cornered hat mounted on a galloping spotted horse with rhinestone eyes atop a glittered, grassy knoll, pencil inscription to underside: "12-21 1977 $175.00 E. Pierce". H: 8 1/2 in. L: 12 1/4 in. PROVENANCE: Property of a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Collector. Fleisher Gallery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1970s. Exhibited: The Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio, Elijah Pierce: Woodcarver, January 24-May 16, 1993 and subsequent national tour through October 1994. Illustrated and featured on exhibition souvenir magnets, and on the front covers of the exhibition gallery handout and public relations brochure. Illustrated New York magazine, June 28-July 5, 1993, pg. 19a in an advertisement promoting the exhibition's tour stop at the Studio Museum in Harlem, June 13-August 29, 1993. According to correspondence from E. Jane Connell, Curator of European Art and Pierce Project Coordinator, "Horse and Rider has pretty much become the mascot for [the exhibition].
