Thomas Cooper Gotch, RBA (British, 1854-1931)

Lot 730: Thomas Cooper Gotch, RBA (British, 1854-1931)

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Thomas Cooper Gotch, RBA (British, 1854-1931), "The Children of L. Breitmeyer, Esq.", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 54-1/2" x 72". Presented in an attractive giltwood and gesso frame. Provenance: Exhibited Royal Academy, London, 1898, no. 375. Literature: A. Graves, The Royal Academy Of Arts: 1769-1904, vol. 2, p. 279; Cassell, Royal Academy Illustrated, 1898, p. 59; Athenaeum, 3679, 30 April 1898, p.573; The Times, 1 June 1898, p. 4. Gotch was one of the few 19th-century painters of children capable of merging an idealized version of childhood with the personality of the individual sitter. The children depicted in the painting presented here - the brooding Winifred, the confidant Alan, and the reserved baby of the family Cecil - are united by the richly patterned interior and tightly controlled composition, yet set apart by a clearly defined sense of self. As the art critic Charles Caffin wrote of the artist in 1910: "In his imagination childhood marches on, already catching something of the coming light". Reference: Charles Caffin, "A Painter of Childhood and Girlhood", Harper's Monthly Magazine, vol. 59, May 1910, pp. 922-932.

Lot 42: Thomas Cooper Gotch

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: 1854-1931 the message signed l.c.: T.C.Gotch watercolour, circular 40.5 cm., 16 in. diameter !82500-115000 This is a watercolour version of Gotch's famous and much exhibited composition The Message. The oil, which is almost identical to the present subject but rather larger in scale (84.5 cm., 33 1/4 in. diameter), was first shown at the Royal Academy in 1903, and most recently seen in public at the Barbican Art Gallery on the occasion of the exhibition The Last Romantics - The Romantic Tradition in British Art from Burne-Jones to Stanley Spencer in 1989 (catalogue no.122), and subsequently sold at Phillips, London, 12 June 1990, lot 119. The author of the Barbican exhibition's catalogue speculated about the intended meaning of the composition. Although denying all conventional iconography, the painting appears to show the Annunciation by the archangel Gabriel to Mary. However, when the oil version appeared at the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1910 as part of an exhibition of Gotch's 'child pictures' a note in the catalogue (Children's Portraits and Child Pictures by T.C. Gotch) explained that the moment described was simply that when 'a young girl perceives that life has for her a new and unsuspected meaning.' The model for the figure of the girl was the artist's daughter Phyllis. A portrait study of Phyllis, made in preparation for the finished version of The Message was sold at Phillips, 12 June 1990, lot 121. The figure of the angel is adapted from that in Botticelli's Annunciation in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, a painting which Gotch and his wife Caroline had studied in 1891 and of which he kept a photograph. A drawn cartoon for the subject, apparently made at Shottermill in Surrey in the early months of 1903 remained in the possession of Gotch's descendants until it also was sold at Phillips, 12 June 1990, lot 120.
