MAYA LIN (b. 1959): ECLIPTIC (1999)

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: MAYA LIN (b. 1959): ECLIPTIC (1999) Satin burnished bronze, 1999, initialed 'MSL', dated and numbered 7/30. Note: Chinese-American artist and architect Maya Lin is perhaps best known as the designer of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Lin won the commission through a public design competition at the age of only 21, but her plans and her ethnicity were controversial, forcing her to defend her design in front of Congress which lead to a conceptual compromise. Lin added a bronze statue of soldiers with an American flag to the otherwise non-traditional design of the memorial. Lin's studio art draws from the same inspirations as her architectural designs. Through her organic shapes, Lin explores ideas of technology, beauty and the transcendental, giving us new ways of seeing and experiencing our landscape.
