Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: § Vanessa Bell (British, 1879-1961) The Kitchen Table, Charleston, 1948 signed lower right with initials "VB" oil on canvas h:70 w:51 cm Provenance: The Bloomsbury Workshop, 12 Galen Place, London, WC1. Vanessa Bell, born in 1879, was a member of the Bloomsbury Group and sister of Virginia Woolf. Studying at the Slade School of Art in 1901, she was said by her family to have been excellent at portraiture but she chose to specialise in still lifes, landscapes and interiors with figures. Vanessa Bell was inspired by Roger Fry's Post-Impressionist exhibitions to use more colour and bold arrangements, later in 1914 turning to abstraction. Sadly in 1941, after the death of Virginia, Bell withdrew to isolation, only keeping in contact with close family and artist Duncan Grant. However she continued to paint until she died in 1961.

Description: GIRL BY A TENT37 by 52cm., 14 1/2 by 20 1/2 in.oil on boardPROVENANCEThe Estate of Duncan GrantPaul RochePrivate CollectionNOTEPainted in August 1913 when Bell and other members of the Bloomsbury group including Duncan Grant, Roger Fry, Ka Cox and Maynard Keynes, held a summer camp near Brandon on the Norfolk/Suffolk border. While Grant produced two paintings with the title Tents (both in private collections), Bell chose as her subject her fellow campers. In Girl by a Tent, it is one of the Olivier sisters - central members of the self-styled 'Neo-Pagan' group - who is shown in stark profile in this bold, economical work. Inspired by the distinctive work produced at the camp, Bell later in the year produced the highly schematised Painted Omega Screen (Tents and Figures) now in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

EXHIBITION London, Anthony d'Offay, The Omega Workshops, Alliance and Enmity in English Art 1911-1920, January-March 1984, no. 9. Grant and Bell both painted versions of the camp site: Noel Olivier wrote to Rupert Brooke that she 'liked to see Duncan and Vanessa at their pictures out in the field'.
