Description: Takashi Murakami, the "Warhol of Japan" created a series of portraits in 2007 of "Daruma," the sixth-century founder of Zen Buddhism. The titles of each Daruma image refer directly to the Zen master's life and teachings. Murakami's visual exploration of Daruma adds to a long history and tradition of portraying the Zen master. Murakami's images of Daruma may be read in context with his exploration of consumption, excess and desire in today's consumer culture. The spiritual and intellectual conundrum evoked is not a new one but perhaps the modern day version of our struggle with it is more intense than ever. "From the perceived debris of the universe..." is an offset lithograph with printing leaf and high-gloss varnishing, in an edition of 300, hand-signed and numbered by the artist.

And then, and then... Hello

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Takashi Murakami’s “Mr. DOB” portraits date back to the beginning of the artist’s career when the artist was looking for an iconic, easily recognizable, self-portrait – a way to brand himself. Like a logo, the letter D appears in the character’s left ear, the letter B in the right ear, and O is formed by the character’s face. Though the overall image is reminiscent of Mickey Mouse, all of Murakami’s elements are traditionally Japanese – anime characters like Doraemon and Sonic the Hedgehog and the letters DOB are thought to be a contraction of “Dobojite dobojite” (why? why?), a catchphrase of Japanese comedian Toru Yuri. This offset lithograph is in an edition of 300, hand-signed and numbered by the artist.

Description: Takashi Murakami created the "Superflat" style which is, in part, a tribute to the two-dimensional style of some Japanese cartoons. The term also reflects the smashing of distinctions between fine art and commercial art, between high culture and low. Murakami told an Interviewer once, "In Japan, there is no high and there is no low. It's all flat." This offset lithograph on mirror coat paper is a limited edition of 300.
