He studied traditional Japanese painting at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, where he received his BFA, MFA, and PhD. His work explores commercial Japanese pop culture and questions the dichotomy between what contemporary society considers high and low art, or fine art and commercial animation. Murakami’s recognizable motifs include bright-eyed cartoons and kitschy, wide-smiling flowers. The artist has collaborated with several high-fashion designers and celebrities, including Louis Vuitton and Kanye West. In 2008, the Times magazine named Murakami one of the “100 Most Influential People,” and in 2010, he became the first Japanese artist to have an exhibition at the Palace of Versailles in France. His first retrospective in 2007 traveled for two years from the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, to the Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York, to the Museum fur Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt, and ending at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Spain. Today, Murakami lives and works between New York and Tokyo.ConditionEach with one extremely minor soft handling crease at margin edge. Otherwise in overall good condition. Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: "I think that most people would agree that color is among the most important elements of my work and when we look back on the life of Yves Klein, the reason becomes clear. Color is much like the means of Japanese Zen Buddhism, it is a tool that can instantaneously guide people to a world outside themselves. I would like to dedicate this exhibition to the artist who has most passionately pursued this exploration of color, Yves Klein," -Takashi Murakami. Printed in 2012, signed by the artist, from an edition of 300 and framed with archival materials.

Melting DOB E

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Takashi Murakami sees art as a way to explore history and also as a way to predict the future through not only its creation but its interpretation. For him, art is not just an experience in a single moment, but all the ripples it creates outward from that moment of creation. You’ll find he explores core themes over and over again, in the pop tradition, but similar also to Pablo Picasso who returned obsessively to particular concepts again and again throughout his long career. This offset lithograph on mirror coat paper by Murakami is a limited edition of 300 printed in 2008.

Description: Takashi Murakami, the "Warhol of Japan" created a series of portraits in 2007 of "Daruma," the sixth-century founder of Zen Buddhism. The titles of each Daruma image refer directly to the Zen master's life and teachings. Murakami's visual exploration of Daruma adds to a long history and tradition of portraying the Zen master. Murakami's images of Daruma may be read in context with his exploration of consumption, excess and desire in today's consumer culture. The spiritual and intellectual conundrum evoked is not a new one but perhaps the modern day version of our struggle with it is more intense than ever. "From the perceived debris of the universe..." is an offset lithograph with printing leaf and high-gloss varnishing, in an edition of 300, hand-signed and numbered by the artist.

And then, and then... Original Blue

Estimate: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Takashi Murakami’'s “Mr. DOB” portraits date back to the beginning of the artist'’s career when the artist was looking for an iconic, easily recognizable, self-portrait – a way to brand himself. Like a logo, the letter D appears in the character’s left ear, the letter B in the right ear, and O is formed by the character’s face. Though the overall image is reminiscent of Mickey Mouse, all of Murakami’'s elements are traditionally Japanese anime characters like Doraemon and Sonic the Hedgehog and the letters DOB are thought to be a contraction of “Dobojite dobojite” (why? why?), a catchphrase of Japanese comedian Toru Yuri. This print is an offset lithograph in an edition of 300, hand-signed and numbered by the artist.
