Description: Facelift wood, steel, aluminium and cloth 108 x 106 x 74in. (274 x 269 x 188cm.) Executed in 1991 EXHIBITION London, The Saatchi Gallery, 'Richard Artschwager, Cindy Sherman, Richard Wilson' Jan.-July 1991. NOTES 'Facelift', 1991 is one of the first free-standing installations that Wilson has made. In this work Wilson bought and dismembered a second hand caravan. "Its jerry-built tackiness made it too flimsy to use, so he built a more substantial structure of wood and aluminium that mimicked the original, then attached the panelling, doors and windows to the outside like veneer pegged onto an armature. The windows and one of the original curtains indicate the initial function of nomadic dwelling, so achieving a paradoxical hybrid between hand-crafting and cheap mass-production, abstraction and figuration. (S. Kent & J. Blyth, 'Shark Infested Waters, The Saatchi Collection of British Art in the 90s', London, 1994, p.110). In 'Facelift' Wilson joins together a material transformation with a perceptual transformation that takes place through sight and time. "I like the principle" Wilson says, "of constructing by removal, of creating a new order by taking something away".
