Franklin, bought 1981;Private collection LITERATUREWilliam E Frederman, A Pre-Raphaelite Gazette: The Penkill Letters of Arthur Hughes to William Bell Scott and Alice Boyd, 1886-97, 1967, pp. 15, 34, 57;Leonard Roberts, Arthur Hughes - His Life & Works, 1997, cat. no. 302, p. 222, repr. colour pl. 101, p. 115NOTEIn 1894 Hughes spent two weeks with his friends Alice Boyd and William Bell Scott at their home Penkill Castle in Northumberland. It was during this trip that he painted An Ayrshire Glen in the grounds at Penkill 'where it was very mild in her pretty deep wooded glen with its falling streams' (letter to Frederick Shields, 1 December 1894). The stream and the stone steps leading to it are still extant at Penkill. Hughes clearly did not finish the picture until 1895 as he wrote to his daughter Agnes on the 11th of January that year stating that he was still working on the picture.

Description: Study of a young tennis player inscribed 'L.V.H' (upper right) pencil and watercolour heightened with white 183/4 x 9 5/8 in. (47.7 x 24.5 cm.) PROVENANCE Anon. sale, Sotheby's Belgravia, 26 June 1979, lot 92, when acquired by the present owner. NOTES Hughes' lyrical aesthetic lends this unfinished study a quiet elegance. His most iconic image, Midsummer Eve (sold at Christie's, New York, 15 February 1995, lot 288, œ267,516), is a triumphant testament to his artistic inheritance. As the nephew and pupil of renowned fairy painter Arthur Hughes (1832-1915), Edward was absorbed into the Pre-Raphaelite circle and assisted William Holman-Hunt (helping to complete the St Paul's version of The Light of the World, as Hunt's eyesight weakened). Hughes worked mainly in watercolour, painting literary subjects of a dreamy Symbolist hue, but also executed many portraits in red or black chalk. A regular contributor to The Royal Water-Colour Society, he was Vice-President from 1901-3, and his picture Biancabella and Samaritana was shown at the first Venice Biennale, 1895.

Description: and signed and inscribed 'Sweet Lavender/Arthur Hughes/Wallington Bridge/near Carshalton/Surrey' on an old label on the reverse; oil on panel 22 1/2 x 12 1/8 in. (57 xx 31 cm.) PROVENANCE: Anon. sale, Sotheby's Belgravia, 29 June 1976, lot 59 (unsold at œ550) Anon. sale, Sotheby's Belgravia, 18 April 1978, lot 68 (sold œ600) EXHIBITED: Liverpool, Free Public Library and Museum, "Autumn Exhibition of Modern Pictures," 1876, no. 192 (as 'Sweet Blooming Lavender', priced at 70 guineas) The picture was exhibited at Liverpool in the autumn of 1876, and was probably painted the previous spring. When it was sold in 1978 it had a companionpiece, "The Mall, St. James's Park," which also showed a girl selling lavender (in this case seated), with a lady being carried in a sedan chair in the distance. The two works probably owe something to Francis Wheatley's famous "Cries of London," and certainly belong to the 'Queen Anne' revival which was such a notable element in 'aesthetic' taste at this date. Kate Greenaway perhaps offers the most obvious parallel, and the pictures are contemporary with the building of Bedford Park, Norman Shaw's innovative garden suburb in Chiswick, with its neo-Georgian architecture and self-consciously 'aesthetic' lifestyle. Hughes must have had friends among the many artists who lived there - for instance, T.M. Rooke, who, significantly enough, lived in Queen Anne's Gardens (see lot 332). As the label on the back confirms, Hughes himself had recently moved to Wallington, near Carshalton in Surrey, where he had inherited a property from a cousin, Miss Mary Ann Dredge, which he re-named 'Wandle Bank'; but in 1891 he too would move to an eighteenth-century ambient, settling in a charming red-brick house (still standing) on Kew Green. We are grateful to Leonard Roberts for his help in preparing this entry.
