Ossip Zadkine, Le Merveilleux Radeau, 1965

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Signed and dated 'O.Z 65' lower right. The drawing is registered in the Zadkine Research Center, Brussels, under "no. P2096". We would like to thank Richard Oudenhuysen, Zadkine Research Center Brussels, for his kind information dated 15 February 2014.This drawing served as the design for the eponymous lithograph, which was created in the year that followed (cf. Czwiklitzer 170). The title of this very vibrant work translates as "The wondrous raft". This name is initially surprising, particularly because it is a sculptor's drawing that apparently shows a figure standing with its two legs on a plinth. Only upon closer inspection does the horizontal passage permit an interpretation as a water surface and the diagonal element as a kind of oar. The human body is only hinted at, but is nonetheless immediately grasped as such. This late drawing by the famous sculptor displays a great freedom and freshness. It is, after all, precisely the puzzling aspect of the otherwise well-balanced composition that provides it with so much power to captivate. Zadkine's goal or inner necessity was to artistically intensify nature instead of simply copying it: "In order to avoid the perils of 'Copyism', you have to strive to recognise what the object before your eyes possesses in terms of spiritual content and transfer this spirituality into the artwork. Have no fear of transforming the object, if this occurs with a clear conscience, i.e., if you are convinced of the necessity of doing so" (Ossip Zadkine, Galerie im Erker, St. Gallen 1961, p. 15, cited in: Eduard Trier, Bildhauertherorien im 20. Jahrhundert, Berlin 1992, p. 198).
