In a letter to F J Shields on 1 December 1894, Hughes wrote "I have been away five weeks, three of them with my daughter Agnes in Cumberland, and a fortnight with Miss Boyd getting a little work at both places, and outdoors at Penkill where it was very mild in her pretty deep wooded glen with its falling streams."
