Description: AMERICAN SCHOOL, LATE 19TH CENTURY Portrait of William Merritt Chase. Oil on card stock. 155x155 mm; 6 1/8x6 1/8 inches.William Merrit Chase (1849-1916) was one of America's foremost plein-air painters and important teachers. Locating in New York after his studies in Europe, he taught at the Art Students League from 1878 to 1894 and also founded the Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art in 1891 near his summer home on eastern Long Island. This was America's first plein-air painting school, evoking the French schools abroad, and helping to bring Impressionism to an entire generation of American artists. Notable students included Charles Demuth, Marsden Hartley, Gifford and Reynolds Beal, Daniel Garber, Charles Webster Hawthorne, Edward Hopper, John Marin, Georgia O'Keeffe, Charles Sheeler, and Martha Walter, among many others. Known for his flamboyant manor, in this portrait Chase is pictured with his dramatic Van Dyck beard and mustache, a style he maintained all his life.

WILLIAM MERRITT CHASE, (AMERICAN 1849-1916),

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: WILLIAM MERRITT CHASE (american 1849-1916)/span "PORTRAIT OF MRS. G" Oil on canvas 52 x 38 1/2 in. (132.1 x 97.8cm) c. 1888 [Pisano OP.162] provenance: /spanThe Sitter. By descent in the family. Private Collection, Ohio. exhibited:/span "63rd Annual Exhibition." The National Academy of Design. New York. 1888. literature:/span "National Academy of Design 63rd Annual Exhibition." Daily Tribune. March 31, 1888, pp. 4-5. "National Academy of Design 63rd Annual Exhibition." Sun. April 3, 1888, pg. 16. "The Academy Exhibition." Nation. April 19, 1888. pp. 330-31. "Spring Exhibition of the Academy and the Society." Art Review 3 no.1 [July - August 1888] pg. 31. note:/span This painting depicts Cornelia Rogers Huntington Greer (b. 1836) and was likely commissioned given that Chase also completed a portrait of Greer's son Colbert (OP. 145). This painting was originally dated circa 1912 based on information provided by descendants of the sitter. However, several reviews of a work entitled Portrait of Mrs. G. that was exhibited once during the artist's lifetime - at the Spring Exhibition at the National Academy of Design in 1888 - suggest an earlier date, as they seem to be describing the present portrait of Mrs. Greer. A critic for the New York Daily Tribue writes "Mr. Chase's portrait of an elderly lady seated in a fur-trimmed blue robe, seen against a hanging of a very pale blue, is a picture which has earned its honorable place not only by the cleverness of coloring, but also by the firmness and strength of the modeling." (New York Daily Tribune[March 31, 1888];4-5). A writer for the New York Sun comments, "More should be said for the portrait of an elderly lady in a dark blue gown against a curtain of lighter blue" ([New York]Sun, April 3, 1888, 16). A rave review and further description of the work is given in the Nation, which describes it as "dignified, of excellent style, and showing the artist's appreciation of quiet tones and his ability to harmonize the figure and costume, with the accessories, in a complete ensemble at its best" (Nation, April 19, 1888, 331). Finally, another critic discussing the exhibition writes that the Portrait of Mrs. G has been "treated with an eye to color likewise, but in a much quieter and more wholesome manner. There is more of the character of the sitter about it, and a reasonable concession to the needs of good portrait painting" (Art Review, July-August 1888, 31). Further supporting the date circa 1888 is that Chase painted the portrait of Greer's son Colbert circa 1886: it seems likely that he would have executed both portraits at around the same time. A further consideration is the age of the sitter, who would have been seventy-six years old in 1912 (the original dating), though in the portrait she appears to be much closer to the fifty-two years of age she would have been in 1888. (Pisano, Ronald G., The Complete Catalogue of Works of Known and Documented Works by William Merritt Chase vol. 2. pg. 82). The lot will be accompanied by ephemera relating to the sitter.

Condition Report: Generally good overall condition, with most of painting unrestored and in original condition. The canvas is relined and there is some general minor restoration visible under u.v. light. Figure's nose at left, part of chin, area below her belt and part of right arm with very precise retouch. There is some restoration in parts of the background at left. Parts of the bottom of painting with pigments that give some fluorescence under u.v. light. We believe the latter, including an area of figure's dress near lower left corner, are likely due to the nature of the pigments, rather than due to restoration. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by Freeman's Conditions of Sale.

WILLIAM MERRITT CHASE, (AMERICAN 1849-1916), PORTRAIT OF A LADY, SAID TO BE MARY HUSSEY

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: WILLIAM MERRITT CHASE (american 1849-1916)/span PORTRAIT OF A LADY, SAID TO BE MARY HUSSEY Signed 'WMM Chase' bottom left, oil on canvas 30 x 24 in. (76.2 x 61cm) provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, Pennsylvania. By descent in the family. note:/span Mary Hussey was the wife of Thomas Earle (1796-1849), an attorney, journalist and vice-presidential candidate who settled in Philadelphia in 1817. We kindly thank D. Frederick Baker for confirming the authenticity of this painting. This portrait will be assigned a catalogue number and place in the files of the William Merritt Chase catalogue raisonné.

Condition Report: Painting is relined but in generally very good overall condition. We note some tiny, unobtrusive clusters of surface specks which appear to be foreign matter (dirt). At lower center left, and NOT touching any of the signature, there are several small diagonal lines that appear dark under u.v. light, and a contiguous area to the right of these lines, approx. 1 x 1 1/4 inches, in which the surface appears to have a disruption - as seen in matte light and under u.v. light - this area is likely restoration. As seen in the catalogue photo, the paler highlights to face appear to be by Chase's design and do not appear to be restoration. Gutheridge. Collection of Luigi Maraffi, Pennsylvania. Private Collection, Pennsyvlania. By descent in the family. Private Collection, Pennsylvania. Acquired from the above. Private Collection, Pennsylvania. exhibited:/span St. Louis Mercantile Library, St. Louis, Missouri. October, 1871. note:/span In all likelihood the above painting is SL.11 in The Complete Catalogue of Known and Documented Work by William Merritt Chase (1849-1916). We kindly thank D. Frederick Baker for his assistance in cataloguing this painting.

Condition Report: Apparently fine overall condition; not relined, slight impression of canvas at top from stretcher bar verso; some minor surface abrasions, minor rippling of canvas and a small hole with missing canvas/paint at left (visible in catalogue illustration). Under u.v. light there is uneven/residual varnish throughout, making it difficult to accurately 'read' painting. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. WILLIAM MERRITT CHASE, American, 1849-1916,

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: WILLIAM MERRITT CHASE American, 1849-1916 "Sailboats on Beach", ca. 1886. Signed lower left "W. M. Chase". The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by D. Frederick Baker. According to Mr. Baker, the painting dates to "the mid to late 1880s, possibly done in the summer of 1884 in Holland, but more likely painted on or near Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York during the years after Chase returned from Holland. The scene would, in this case, be the Atlantic Ocean, made more evident by the steamer on the distant horizon (c.r.). Chase lived for the first few months of 1887 in Brooklyn and completed many small panel paintings about the city dating from 1885 until 1888. The painting relates to The Coast of Holland (1884), a very large canvas, which features a beached sail boat, and, curiously enough, to At the Boatlanding (ca. 1902), a panel painting of Canoe Place near his home in Shinnecock Hills, and featuring several sail boats pulled ashore the inlet. But it is most likely a Brooklyn work, ca. 1886." Provenance: Private Collection, Cape Cod. Descended in the consignor's family. Estate of Maud Williams, Kennebunkport, Maine. Oil on wood panel, 10 1/4" x 8 1/8". Unframed.
