(2) NOTES Known as THE Steam Yacht, Corsiar III was designed by the master of the graceful line J. Beavor-Webb and built by T. S. Marvel with the finest job of plating known. The beautiful sheer of her shining black hull, her gilded figurehead and trailboards, and the superb shape of her clipper bow, among other aspects, made her the ideal of a yacht, majestic as well as graceful from any angle. J. Pierpont Morgan owned her exclusively, not only in summers as a floating home near New York, but for commuting to and from his estate on the Hudson River. He often took her to Europe as well, as Mr. Morgan had several homes there. When the United States declared war, J. Pierpont Morgan Jr. turned her over to the Navy, where she was fitted with guns depth charges, and ammunition storage. Eventually, Mr. Morgan ordered a new Corsair (4th), so in 1930 the grand old lady was given to the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey, and renamed Oceanographer. She was decommissioned on Sept. 21, 1944, and in accordance with Mr. Morgans conditions was scrapped late in 1944.

Description: H.E.Boucher Mfg. Co.; American, ca. 1914 This model is a classic piece by Boucher Mfg. Co. modeled in 3/8" to 1' scale. This is the standard scale set down by NYYC for yachts of this dimension. The model is built up from the solid, the hull filled faired and painted. The decks are from veneer which has had the planking drawn in India ink and sealed with varnish. The deck structures are built up in wood, including mahogany for the companionways, the main cabin structures, and the funnel base. The fittings on the model include: jack staff, anchors, chocks, anchor davit, ventilators, two cannons mounted forward of the bridge, chart table, binnacles, cage mast, launches swung out on davits, dories on cradle swung in on davits, keep away poles, mahogany and lattice gangway, deck plates, stern cushions which are tufted, propeller and numerous other details. All of the metal work is either in German silver or is gold plated. The model is displayed in two formats. On the starboard view she is modeled as if she were in the water. The port side view shows her as if she were at the shipyard on keel blocks and posts. On the aft port side is the Boucher Mfg. Co. medallion which is mounted in side the case. The case is the original copper framed glass case. 681/2 x 171/2 x 221/2 in. (173.9 x 44.4 x 57.1 cm.) cased dimensions. NOTES This is a very fine and rare model of the steam yacht Aramis built for Arthur H. Marks of Marblehead, MA. The Aramis was designed by Swasey, Raymond and Page and built by Robert Jacob of City Island, New York. Equipped with one of the first marine diesel engines to be installed in an American yacht, Aramis came under the Navy's gaze soon after the United States entered World War I. The Navy acquired Aramis on 3 July, "enrolled" her six days later, and accepted her on 11 August for service at the New York Navy Yard. The Aramis had principal dimensions of: LOA: 157, LWL: 154, Beam: 22.4, Depth of hold: 10.6, Draft: 7, and a gross tonnage of 269GT. She was a twin-screw power with two Craig 6 cylinder diesel engines producing 360-400 horsepower. The owner, Mr. Marks was a member of the New York Yacht Club. The model flies his private signal as well as the American yacht ensign and the burgee for the New York Yacht Club. Aramis' activities following the end of World War I are unclear; but, on 22 November 1918, Rear Admiral Thomas Washington, Commander, Battleship Division 3, Atlantic Fleet, assumed command of his division and broke his flag in Aramis. Unfortunately, Aramis' history of engine trouble proved her undoing. She proved to be unsuitable for new tasks; and, on 3 December, Owera (SP-167) was ordered to proceed to relieve Aramis as flagship for the Commander of Battleship Division 3. The Chief of Naval Operations subsequently directed the Commandant of the 3d Naval District on 3 September 1921 to place Aramis out of commission "as soon as is practicable," "with a view toward the eventual recommissioning of this vessel." Towed by the fleet tug Iuka (AT-37), Aramis reached the reserve basin at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on 9 October 1923 and remained inactive until redesignated as a "District Craft, Unclassified," in late 1924. She was then slated to serve as a tender and houseboat to Nokomis (PY-6), which was being assigned to survey duty off the coast of Cuba. For the next nine years, the yacht remained in operation in this fashion. Finally, after she had deteriorated to the point where she was unfit for further naval service, Aramis was placed on the fist of naval vessels to be disposed of by sale or salvage. Stripped of all useful items at the Naval Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, by mid-July 1933, Aramis was struck from the Navy list on 20 July 1933. She was sold to R. E. O'Fallon of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, on 13 November 1933. Her ultimate fate is unknown. The H.E. Boucher Mfg. Co. was the principal model builder for the New York Yacht Club from 1899 through to 1950. The model of the steam yacht Vanadis in the model room of the New York Yacht Club is from the same period as the Aramis and is displayed in a similar fashion. Please see Lot 44 for a brief history of H.E. Boucher, Mfg. Co.
