Ford of Detroit who was a member of the New York Yacht Club.*William Gardner (1859-1934), a graduate of Cornell University and The Royal Naval College in England, opened an office at No 1. Broadway. He specialized in the design of sailing yachts for the racing elite. The schooner yacht "Atlantic" held the transatlantic sailing record of 12 days, 4 hours for almost a century. Caroline, Galatea, Aztec and Margaret are the more prominent of the Gardner designed steam yachts. "Caroline" was 166' long and owned by Edward Ford of Toledo Ohio who sold her to Horrace Dodge in 1917 who renamed her Delphine after his daughter. After the launch of a new Delphine in 1921, Horace's widow Anna Thomson Dodge sold the Delphine/Caroline to Mrs. John B. Scolotman of Grosse Point Shores. She renamed it Stellaris and it remained in active service for another decade until a New York based cruise company purchased her in 1941, renaming it the Sylph II and using her on their "New York Waterway Cruises, Inc".
