Description: Tolkein (J.R.R.) - The Hobbit, or, There and Back Again, first edition, first impression with plain plates , frontispiece, plate and 8 illustrations by Tolkien, map endpapers, original decorative cloth , slightly cocked, corners a little bumped, otherwise excellent, first issue dust-jacket with ms. correction on lower inside flap , spine very slightly darkened , spine ends and corners a little chipped, small 1/5" portion of loss to head of spine, closed tear to head of loser panel with tape repair to verso, a few small chips and short closed tears to head and foot, insect damage to head of upper flap, split to foot of upper fore-edge , 8vo, 1937. Despite the defects mentioned, this is still a very good, unsophisticated, example of the dust-jacket with both panels bright.

Description: Includes:11 letters and cards to Mrs. Hickock from Carlos  Baker at the Princeton University Dept. of English - Baker assisted Mrs. Hickock in attempting to sell the archive of some 50 letters, which Princeton did not have the funds to purchase themselves ("...but at least we'll have the Xerox copies for the collection.)11 letters to Mrs. Hickock from other academics and autograph and antiquarian book dealers regarding the collection and its possible sale.6 letters to Mrs. Hickock from Jonathan Gordon, the collector who eventually purchased the collection, for $5,500.Mot of the letters with tne original mailing envelopes.Revealing archive of letters surrounding the marketing and sale of an important group of letters from Ernest Hemingway to Guy Hickock - the two had met in Paris in the 1920's, and remained friends throughout their lives. Carlos Baker of Princeton University offers an assessment of the letters for Mrs. Hickock, and gives her leads on individuals and dealers to contact who might be interested in purchasing them, and in the process comments on his own biography of Hemingway that he is writing. The other correspondents include Donald Gallup at Yale University; Mrs. Louis Henryt Cohn at House of Books, Ltd.; Edward K. Thompson of Life Magazine (cautioning her that the literary rights to the letters remain with the Hemingway estate); Henry W. Wenning, Rare Books; and the autograph dealer Charles Hamilton.

Description: Colonial Lottery1802 Letters Regarding the Easton Delaware Bridge Lottery1802 Autographed Letters Regarding the Easton Delaware Bridge Lottery, Lot of 2, NY, Choice Very Fine.This early bridge was a covered wooden arch designed and built by the pioneer bridge builder, Timothy Palmer.Two autograph letters signed, "Jon. Ogden", New York, August 6 & 10, 1802, regarding lottery tickets for the Easton Delaware Bridge Lottery. Written to a William Meredith, of Philadelphia, In part: "...If you have an opportunity for inquiring whether the following Tickets... are blanks or prizes in the first Class in the Supplement to the Easton Delaware Bridge Lottery - you will oblige me--..." Both letters are beautifully written on fine-laid, watermarked paper, 9" x 7.5" each, with few flaws--one with some ink erosion. Wonderful, first-hand period reference to an early lottery! Ex-James DuPont collection of U.S. and foreign lottery tickets, Smythe April 8, 1993 #116. (2 items)About the year 1797 a toll bridge was begun in Easton. A freshet washed the first structure from its foundations during construction, and in 1805 the Easton Delaware Bridge Company, under authorization from the State of Pennsylvania, raised by lottery a fund with which they erected a bridge. This bridge was a covered wooden arch designed and built by the pioneer bridge builder, Timothy Palmer.
