Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: An important and extremely rare deck watch caliber type II; original mahogany case with numbered signature bone plate. The watch was awarded 3rd prize for 31st place in the pocket chronometer 1st class category in the test at Neuchâtel in 1907 and in 1908 won a 2nd prize for 6th place in the deck chronometer category Case: silver, polished, reeded band, engraved silver dome. Dial: enamel, signed, radial Roman numerals, auxiliary seconds, blued spade hands. Movm.: 2/3 plate movement, frosted, gilt, large bimetallic experimental Guillaume chronometer balance with 2 screws and 2 movable trapezoid weights, micrometer fine adjusting device.According to the classification by Fritz von Osterhausen this chronometer is fitted with a modified type II caliber. Osterhausen only verified six chronometers which use caliber II. The chronometer at hand is a variant that has not been registered until now; its balance cock is curved and not straight. The experimental Guillaume balance has large regulation weights, which Ditisheim otherwise only employed in his decimal chronometer "Tropomètre" no. 16815 with "échappement à détente". Marine chronometers usually feature this type of balance staff; here the same design has been used on a smaller scale. The movement is unusual too in that it employs a regulation system with an uncommon micrometer correction device – it has not been known until now that Paul Ditisheim had ever used such a construction. These distinguishing marks make this experimental marine chronometer one of the mostinteresting and outstanding timekeeping instruments from the house of Paul Ditisheim. Paul Ditisheim (1868-1945) He was one of the most famous Swiss maker of watches and chronometers, who did most of his research and his publications in the field of precision timekeeping. He did his apprenticeship at the watchmaking school in La Chaux-de-Fonds, before working in Ponts-de-Martel, Berlin, Paris, and Rotherham (near Coventry). In 1892 he opened up a watchmaking factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds. He presented his watches in many exhibitions and was very successful in designing pocket chronometers.

Frankurt, Germany

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Urban Brahier, Movement No. 31020, Case No. 1940, 67 mm, 259 g, circa 1950 A rare and large observatory chronometer with a 42h power reserve and original mahogany box - contest chronometer of the Concours International de Réglage de Chronomètres, Neuchatel 1949 - with original Bulletin de Marche Case: silver, polished. Dial: silvered, Arabic numerals, auxiliary seconds, blued spade hands. Movm.: 4/5 brass plate movement "unfinished", diameter 56 mm, large Guillaume gold screw compensation balance, blued Breguet balance spring. Concours International de Réglage de Chronomètres For the 100 year anniversary of the republic and the canton Neuchâtel the observatory in Neuchâtel organized its last international competitions. Urban Brahier from Geneva had been working as a master régleur at Vacheron and Constantin for many years, with the réglage of tourbillons being his speciality; this was the last watch he ever entered in a test and he was awarded position 117 and a Bulletin de Marche. Richard Miklosch mentions another observatory watch which won a first prize and a Grand Bulletin de Marche. About 15 watches with this calibre are known, most of them are signed as "movement type I" by Paul Ditisheim respectively Solvil in Geneva. Two of these watches, no. 31012 and no. 31020 (the watch at hand), are described as "unfinished observatory chronometers". No. 31012 is illustrated and described in: Fritz von Osterhausen "Paul Ditisheim Chronometrier", Neuchâtel 2003, p. 56ff.

Description: An important, large and heavy deck watch with 52h power reserve indicator, produced for the "Bundeswehr" no. 6645-12-145-4672, with mahogany box and mahogany transport case Case: sterling silver, polished, signed dome, screw back with military engravings, reeded band. Movm.: 4/5 plate movement, chatoned, frosted, gilt, movement type I, 9 adj., 21 jewels, large Guillaume screw compensation balance, sapphire endstone on balance, lever and escape wheel. Movement caliber type I This type of movement with its caliber designed for stability and highest precision seems to be the one Ditisheim entered in most of the many competitions they took part in (categories ships'chronometers and pocket chronometers 1st class, according to the Neuchâtel observatory competition terms). So far 10 watches with this caliber are known. Five of them have 6-digit movement numbers. The numbers 701291 and 703266 reached positionings in Neuchâtel in 1924 and 1925, in the ships' chronometers category. The watches with the movement numbers 703393 (with 24-hour dial), 703446, 703450 and 703454 bear the additional signature "Solvil", showing that they were made after 1925 when Ditisheim had already handed over company management. A collection of 2 deck chronometers Solvil / Paul Ditisheim à Genève

by Auktionen Dr. Crott

November 16, 2013

Mannheim, Germany

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Solvil / Paul Ditisheim à Genève, "Grand Prix Paris 1900, Berne 1904", Movement No. 715629, Case No. 458923, 51 mm, 85 g, circa 1925 A rare deck chronometer with 56h power reserve indicator and Ditisheim's patented "Affix" balance Case: silver, polished. Dial: silvered, Roman hours, auxiliary seconds, signed, blued Breguet hands. Movm.: bridge movement, rhodium-plated, ground, chatoned, movement type III, 5 adj., 18 jewels, "Pat. Compens. No. 98234", "Affix" balance, patented fine adjusting device. Paul Ditisheim's movement type III Paul Ditisheim's movement type III was very different from the previous types I and II. As flat and elegant as a modern pocket watch of the Twenties, it has a bridge and cock calibre ; as evident from the large signature sickle-shaped wheelwork bridge, this type was created from a basemovement by Le Coultre. In pocket chronometers this calibre was often fitted with Ditisheim's patented wheel balance with auxiliary compensation (affixes compensateurs - two bimetal blades with screws). Sometimes these watches possess a power reserve indication. This piece is one of 10 watches known so far to have the sickle-shaped minute wheelwork bridge. All but one of these 10 watches have the additional signature "Solvil" and a 6-digit movement number; this means that they were all produced after 1925, the year in which the Solvil company was founded (most likely for the production of pocket watches with this type III movement). Source: "Paul Ditisheim Chronometrier" by Fritz von Osterhausen, published Editions Antonine Simonin 2003, pages 64ff. Cond.: Case: very good, slightly worn. Dial: very good. Movm.: very good, capable of running, cleaning recommended.
