JAN VAN GOYEN, attributed to, THE SAND DUNES

Lot 1040: JAN VAN GOYEN, attributed to, THE SAND DUNES

by Lempertz

May 11, 2013

Cologne, Germany

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: The picture is not listed by Beck. An attribution to Jan van Goyen is however possible when comparing it to the signed painting, dated 1632 and entitled "A pole, three men and a dog" (Beck, op. cit. no. 1002). In addition to the same dimensions, the paintings share alternating, horizontal light and dark areas in the foreground, and the group of men with a dog on the dunes. The motif of the two young men lying in the sand appears in other similar works by van Goyen, for example in Beck no. 993, dated 1629.

Jan van Goyen, On the Beach at Scheveningen

Lot 1161: Jan van Goyen, On the Beach at Scheveningen

by Lempertz

May 17, 2014

Cologne, Germany

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Jan van Goyen, On the Beach at Scheveningen Signed and dated lower center: IVGoyen 1642The first quarter of the 17th century was the starting point for many profound innovations in landscape painting in the Netherlands. The fanciful panoramas of the 16th century, painted as if from above and often combined with religious or historic imagery, were superseded by realistically rendered Dutch landscapes containing scenes of the everyday life of fishers and peasants. The viewpoint is a lower one, the sky begins to take up more space and the observer appears more directly confronted by the depicted scenes. Alongside Salomon van Ruysdael, Jan van Goyen was the other main protagonist in this development, and one of the first important representatives of independant Dutch landscape painting of the 17th century. His oeuvre encompasses almost every subject of this genre, but his views of beaches are of particular significance. The artist depicted these in his typical colour palette of subdued ochre, grey and green hues with subtle shading. The present work is one of van Goyen's finest and largest paintings, and presents the beach at Scheveningen - one of the artist's preferred motifs - in an impressive monumental format. The characteristic church of this seaside town allows for the topographical identification, and beside it we see a plethora of masterfully painted figural staffage, ranging from fishers, their young helpers and dogs in the left foreground to a horse-drawn carriage in the background. 129 x 191 cm

Jan van Goyen, Mighty Castle on a Rock

Lot 1162: Jan van Goyen, Mighty Castle on a Rock

by Lempertz

May 17, 2014

Cologne, Germany

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Jan van Goyen, Mighty Castle on a Rock Monogrammed and dated lower left: VG 1652The depictions of river landscapes with prominent buildings including castles, ruins and forts, are, in van Goyen's oeuvre, less extensive than his other motifs. In most cases, these pictures were created between 1645 and 1655 and thus belong to his later works. Our atmospheric painting depicts a castle-like and probably uninhabited building on a steep slope of a river bank beneath a cloudy sky which occupies more than half of the picture. Van Goyen's primary concern here is the clouds and their reflection in the water, along with the contrasts of brightly lit and shaded areas in the sky, on land and in water. Everything is brought together through the use of a uniform colour scheme.Jan van Goyen's Mighty Castle once belonged to the passionate collector Hermine Feist-Wollheim in Berlin who, alongside high quality porcelain, also owned various paintings. Following her death on 17th November 1933, her sons and heirs faced massive reprisal due to their Jewish heritage, and Dr. Hans Feist-Wollheim's sale of the Goyen painting following his emigration to Switzerland also occurred under considerable pressure. However in spring 2014, a just and fair solution according to the Washington Principles was agreed upon at the behest of the consignor between themselves, Lempertz and the Feist-Wollheim estate. 66 x 97 cm

JAN VAN GOYEN WINTER LANDSCAPE

Lot 1228: JAN VAN GOYEN WINTER LANDSCAPE

by Lempertz

May 12, 2012

Cologne, Germany

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: JAN VAN GOYEN WINTER LANDSCAPE Signed and dated lower left: J. v. Goien 162(.) Dimensions : Diameter 25,2 cm Provenance Art dealer van Diemen & Co, Berlin and Amsterdam 1925. - Coll. Mrs. D. D. Fontheim, London (Sale Christie´s, London, 10.4.1981, no. 21) - Private collection, Germany. This early winter landscape by Jan van Goyen captivates by its clear, sunny atmosphere. On the frozen river that is flanked by buildings, figures amuse themselves on the ice. Hans-Ulrich Beck published it in the first volume of his catalogue raisonné from 1973. There he indicates an incorrect diameter of 35 cm; in fact the diameter of our picture is 25,2 cm. The measurements are exact the some to those of a very similar "Summer Landscape" (lot 1227) by van Goyen, so that these paintings might have been pendantes despite their different provenances. margin scheme

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: LEIDEN 1596-1656 THE HAGUE A YOUNG PICKPOCKET AMONGST A CROWD IN A VILLAGE SQUARE Signed and dated in dark grey ink, lower right: I.V.GOIEN. 1625 and bears inscription in brown ink, verso: Ma couste 30#.../en 1766. Drawn with the point of the brush and two shades of grey ink and wash and black chalk. 146 by 252 mm. EXHIBITED Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum, 1993, cat.30. LITERATURE Hans-Ulrich Beck, Jan van Goyen 1596-1656, vol. III, Doornspijk 1987, p.34-35, no.51A, illus. This and lot 33 belong to a group of approximately 20 early wash drawings by van Goyen which are effectively genre compositions, rather than landscapes. Four are dated 1624, the remainder 1625 (see William W. Robinson, Seventeenth Century Dutch Drawings. A Selection from the Maida and George Abrams Collection, exhib. cat., Amsterdam/Vienna/New York/Cambridge, Mass., 1991-92, under cat. 32). In van Goyen's paintings of the same period there is also a greater emphasis on the figures than is the case in his later works, but this was always within the context of a landscape composition and he never seems to have produced paintings of genre subjects. Van Goyen's series of early genre drawings is in some ways reminiscent of the emblematic and other illustrations of an artist such as Adriaen van de Venne, whose works van Goyen would surely have known; this raises the possibility that these drawings were originally intended to accompany some sort of text, now lost. But whatever their purpose, they are a fascinating, and humourous, record of Dutch life of the early 1620s. Here, a youth on the right of the composition has just hit a ball towards the skittles visible behind the dog to the left; he is playing a game called "negen-kuylen", literally "ninepins". A large crowd is watching the game, and the small boy in the foreground takes advantage of the diversion to pick the pocket of one of the onlookers.

Lot 10: Jan Josefsz. van Goyen

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Leiden 1696 - 1656 The Hague a view of the hague from the south-east, seen from across a canal, with a trekschuit to the left, a windmill in the centre, and a merry company in a rowing boat in the foreground signed in monogram and indistinctly dated on the boat in the centre foregound: VG.6.6 (or 56) oil on oak panel 43 by 56.6 cm.; 17 by 22D in. This picture is closely related to two other late works by the artist (current whereabouts unknown; see H.-U. Beck, Jan van Goyen 1596-1656, vol. ii, Katalog der Gemalde, Amsterdam 1973, p. 162, cat. nos. 329, 330, the former reproduced). Both of these pictures, which date from 1652, and the present picture show The Hague from the same point, with a canal in the foreground, and a trekschuit to the left of a large windmill on the far bank. The description of cat. no. 330 (which is unillustrated) matches the present picture in all but minor details; the measurements, if correctly given, are sufficiently different to preclude their being one and the same picture. The skyline of The Hague is accurately depicted as seen from the south-east, with the Grote Kerk with its distinctive raised choir prominent to the left. To its left, at the edge of the picture is the tower of Het Huis van Assendelft, and to its right is the Oude Stadhuis on the Groenmarkt. To the right of the windmill are the humped roofs of the Oude Hof on Nordeinde, the Stadbhouderlijk Kwartier of the Buitenhof and the long bulk of the Ridderzaal of the Binnenhof. The foreground is a capriccio view of the Deltse Vaart, the canal along which the passenger ferry (Trekschuit) travelled between The Hague, Delft and Rotterdam. One such vessel is depicted here. The windmill with its sails set to face the prevailing south-westerly breeze is probably De Laakmolen, which stood on the west bank of the canal. The present view is broadly similar to Van Goyen's celebrated panorama of The Hague, by some margin his largest picture, commissioned in 1651, which now hangs in the Haags Historisch Museum (see C. Dumas, Haagse Stadsgezichten, exhibition catalogue, Zwolle 1991, pp. 509-517, no. 41, with extensive reproductions and legend). Provenance: With Thomas Agnew & Sons, London; Acquired by the grandfather of the present owner.

Lot 11: Jan Josefsz. van Goyen

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Leiden 1596 - 1656 The Hague a panoramic view of rhenen signed and dated lower left: vgoyen 1636 oil on panel 101 by 136.5 cm.; 39 3/4 by 53 3/4 in. This is the earliest of Van Goyen's numerous views of Rhenen, and the only one to show the town from the rising ground to the North-East. Of the other 28 that have survived, most of the others show the town from the banks of the Rhine. Although otherwise lacking distinctive landmarks, the unmistakable tower of the Cunerakerk makes the views of Rhenen by Van Goyen, Salomon van Ruysdael, Jacob van Ruisdael, Aelbert Cuyp and others easy to recognise. Some of them also show the Palace of the King of Bohemia on the waterfront. In view of the number of paintings of Rhenen done by Van Goyen between 1636 and 1655, the year before he died, it is curious that no drawings of the town by him survive. Stechow observed that this is one of the earliest of Van Goyen's large panoramic landscapes in which he dispenses completely with compositional framing devices on either side. He was not the first artist to depict Rhenen this way; Hercules Seghers' broad panoramic etched prospect of Rhenen made in 1630, in which the town is also seen from the landward side, may have served as a prototype for Van Goyen. Description: Leiden 1596-1656 The Hague VIEW OF A HAMLET BY A ROAD. Black chalk. 104 by 224 mm. Provenance: General George Catchmade Morgan; his daughter, Sophia Pollard; P. & D. Colnaghi, 1976. Exhibited: London, Shaunagh Fitzgerald at Baskett and Day, November 1980, cat.19. Literature: Hans-Ulrich Beck, Jan van Goyen, vol. III (supplement), Doornspijk 1987, p.121, no.844a/55. This, the following three lots, and lot 71 come from an album which, when Dr. Beck studied it in 1977, contained 67 sketches, mounted and bound together. Dr. Beck dates them circa 1627-1629 and believes they are views of places near Leiden where van Goyen was living at that time. The album was broken up around 1978.
