DON SOMMER REPRODUCTION PIERCE ARROW MASCOT

Lot 207: DON SOMMER REPRODUCTION PIERCE ARROW MASCOT

by Elite Decorative Arts

May 11, 2013

Boynton Beach, FL, USA

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Don Sommer reproduction 1931-1932 Pierce Arrow 'Tireur d'Arc' car mascot. More than just an archer, he is literally a "Marskman of the Bow." Here, William Schnell has created an elegant linear interpretation of classical revival style. The body is presented quite realistically. Yet, zizag positioning creates a rhythmical stylization beyond classic Greco-Roman portrayal. Measures 6 5/8" height x 5 1/2" width x 6 3/8" depth (16.8cm x 13.9cm x 16.1cm).

Lot 1242: PIERCE-ARROW MOTOR CAR CO.

by Boone Shares - The Scripophily Center

April 5, 2014

2020 Antwerp, Belgium

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: 10 January 1935 NEW YORK. BUFFALO. Less than 100 Common Shares of $5. green, black. No 8111. Vignette of a classical male figure. Formed in Buffalo NY in 1928 as successor to a company of similar name. Of the many prestige cars built in the USA, probably none enjoyed greater favour for a longer period than the Pierce Arrow. It began humbly enough. The first Pierce, in 1901, with an engine of less than 3hp, was successful. Pierce was previously a builder of bicycles and birdcages. Larger models appeared in 1902/3, and also the Arrow name. The Pierce-Arrow appeared in 1909, and the firm's high reputation ensured that demand exceeded supply. In 1913/4 large and well-fitted models appeared, and sold at very high prices. The Pierce-Arrow was a top prestige car, comparable with anything in its price-range or even above. By the early 1920s sales were dropping, and the company introduced a smaller range. In the later 1920s falling production, and financial losses led to the company coming under the control of Studebaker. Business continued to fall, and Pierce-Arrow finally went out of business in 1938.
